PHUKET: One half of the dark road that was the centre of a tyre-burning demonstration by Phuket villagers earlier this month now has lighting, and the other half is expected to be properly lit soon.
The provision of street lights on a section of the road to the east coast from Phuket's Heroines Monument has been accelerated after talks between Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha and the Director of the Thalang District.
About 300 residents turned out in east Phuket on July 14 to burn car tyres and partially block the major Phuket artery where they say darkness has caused three deaths.
Pedestrians could not be seen by motorists travelling faster after the road had been widened, the residents said.
The protesters staged their demonstration after darkness to make sure that tourists going to play golf or visit a local waterfall were not delayed or caught up in the local affair.
The northern side of the road now has proper lighting and the southern side is due to be connected soon, officials said.
