Two Phuket Tourists Killed, Two Hurt as Vehicle Hits Pole at Speed

Friday, July 22, 2011
PHUKET: A Latvian woman and a Kuwaiti man died after a car ran off a Phuket road and crashed into a pole early this morning. Two other people - backseat passengers - are in Phuket hospitals.

Phuket City police say the wreck of the bronze Toyota Vios indicates speed was a factor when the vehicle left the road on a curve not far from the landmark Central Festival Phuket shopping centre about 5am.

A Russian woman was taken to Bangkok Hospital Phuket and a Kuwaiti man was admitted to Phuket International Hospital, both private hospitals nearby in Phuket City.

The Latvian woman was believed to have been at the wheel of the rented vehicle. Police believe the four had not been on Phuket long.

The survivors have told police that they were heading back to Chalong, in southern Phuket, from Patong, on Phuket's west coast. But only the Latvian woman at the wheel knew the precise location of their accommodation.

Phuket had seven road deaths in June - well down on the average monthly number. The total Phuket toll for the year to the end of June is 65, precisely half the Phuket toll of 130 for all of last year.

Editor Comment:

I think you'll find that reports at other news outlets now agree with Phuketwan's version, as usual only a few days late.
