Back from the brink: the Korean tourist was lucky to survive today's plunge

Phuket Tourist Plunges 50 Metres Over Cliff: Photo Special

Friday, June 7, 2013
UPDATE

THE MAN who survived a 50-metre plunge in a pickup has been named as Dong Yeol Seo, 56. He will probably face dangerous driving charges.

Original Report

PHUKET: Police will soon be interviewing a man - a Korean tourist - who survived a 50 metre plunge over a cliff in a pickup on Phuket today.

The man is lucky to be alive but is likely to be charged because of damage the pickup wreaked to a decorative fence on the way over.

Excessive speed is the likely reason for the crash, officers say, coming down the road from the Khao Kad viewpoint, on one of Phuket's highest hilltops, about 4.30pm.

A hospital test showed there was no alcohol in the man's blood.

Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation workers placed the man's neck in a brace and eased him up the slope on a sled in a dramatic rescue operation.

He was taken to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City. There was no ID on the man or in the vehicle, a Toyota Vigo.

The man was thrown clear. He was not wearing a seat belt. The pickup finished upside down and will be difficult to recover.

Arrest the tourist, but not the locals when they do the same.

Editor Comment:

The man is being in treated in hospital but may face charges, as anybody would in those circumstances. The word ''arrest'' does not appear in the article.

Ed, why did you not print my comment, it is factual?

We are not interested in your opinion about our choices, Lost in Translation - if indeed that's what you are waffling about. Add value to the subjects in the articles or stop wasting my time.

Ed, you have said previously you want to make Phuket a better place, so how about running articles on previous road accident numbers and estimates for current numbers with the huge increase in cars etc due to the 100,000 Baht first time buyers discount etc.

If you check our files you'll find we've covered road crashes more thoroughly than most, and we don't need you to tell us what to do. Contribute, or go away.
