A two-vehicle crash in Krabi leaves a saloon car badly mangled

Phuket Tourist Loses Foot in Surgery After Motorcycle Crash

Thursday, January 5, 2012
PHUKET: A young Italian tourist visiting Phuket has lost a battle to have a foot reattached, Italian media reports. Now his family has to raise a large amount of cash for his recovery.

Alessandro Amadori, 27, became one of the Phuket victims of the road toll during the 'Seven Days of Danger' safety campaign when his motorcycle crashed into a guard rail about 8.50am on December 30 near Le Meridien Phuket, between Karon and Patong.

His parents, from the town of Olbia, were preparing to catch an aircraft from Rome to Bangkok and on to Phuket when the news came that the operation to reattach Alessandro's foot had failed.

Doctors at Bangkok Hospital Phuket tried twice to reconnect arteries and veins to the foot, Italian media reported, but had to amputate after the second operation was deemed a failure.

Alessandro was enjoying a holiday on Phuket with four friends. He did not have travel insurance.

The mayor of Olbia, Gianni Giovannelli, has launched an appeal to try to help cover the cost of the operation and Alessandro's recovery. The cost is already above 20,000 euros and expected to continue to rise.

Six people have died during the 'Seven Days' campaign on Phuket, two more than last New Year.

Phuketwan supports Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM), an action group that promotes the wearing of helmets by all motorcycle riders and road safety.

How mad are these people that travel here, ride motorbikes and don't even consider taking out travel insurance?

Crazy to travel without insurance but costs already above Eur 20,0000? Sounds like the cost of private health care here is going the way of the US.

Phuket is a dangerous place to drive with any vehicle, let alone a motorbike.

The lack of efficient and affordable public transport forces many to resort to motorbike rental, even when they don't feel safe to do so.

Yet another malady that can be attributed to the Tuk-Tuk stranglehold on Phuket.

One can only repeat it again: buy proper health insurance.

Travel insurance costs less then three beers in your hotel. So stupid to think your invincible. Life after an accident like this is hard enough, but financially ruining your family makes it so much worse.

Editor Comment:

All road crashes are news during the 'Seven Days of Danger,' and all road crashes add up to a high tool of needless deaths.
