Alessandro Amadori, 27, became one of the Phuket victims of the road toll during the 'Seven Days of Danger' safety campaign when his motorcycle crashed into a guard rail about 8.50am on December 30 near Le Meridien Phuket, between Karon and Patong.
His parents, from the town of Olbia, were preparing to catch an aircraft from Rome to Bangkok and on to Phuket when the news came that the operation to reattach Alessandro's foot had failed.
Doctors at Bangkok Hospital Phuket tried twice to reconnect arteries and veins to the foot, Italian media reported, but had to amputate after the second operation was deemed a failure.
Alessandro was enjoying a holiday on Phuket with four friends. He did not have travel insurance.
The mayor of Olbia, Gianni Giovannelli, has launched an appeal to try to help cover the cost of the operation and Alessandro's recovery. The cost is already above 20,000 euros and expected to continue to rise.
Six people have died during the 'Seven Days' campaign on Phuket, two more than last New Year.
Phuketwan supports Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM), an action group that promotes the wearing of helmets by all motorcycle riders and road safety.
How mad are these people that travel here, ride motorbikes and don't even consider taking out travel insurance?
