The man, aged 66, was found about 8.30am in a garden behind the Thai Style Restaurant in Prabaramee Road, said Lieutenant Jongserm Preecha of Patong's Kathu Police Station.
The man's wallet contained just 20 baht.
A passport showed he arrived in Thailand on March 15 and his visa was due to expire on April 13. He was wearing a black tee-shirt and long trousers.
Police have yet to determine where the man was staying on Phuket and want to hear what doctors have to say before ruling out foul play, Lieutenant Jongserm said.
A nylon cord had been attached to a tree in the grassy garden and a chair was not far away.
The man's body is now in Patong Hospital. Phuketwan has the man's name but will not publish it until relatives have been notified.
Anyone feeling depressed on Phuket is advised to discuss their problems with family of friends or visit a doctor.
