Royal Phuket Yacht Club at Phuket's Nai Harn, where a tourist drowned

Phuket Tourist Drowns in Pool at Five-Star Resort

Sunday, October 7, 2012
PHUKET: A Chinese tourist who was soon to be married drowned in a pool at a well-known resort in southern Phuket yesterday.

The man, named by Phuket police as Kan Chgn, 28, was on a holiday with his bride-to-be at Nai Harn, a popular southern beach.

The couple were planning to wed soon after returning from their brief Phuket holiday.

Colonel Boonlert On-Kang, of Chalong Police Station, which oversees Nai Harn, said the couple were staying at the five-star Royal Phuket Yacht Club.

''We have been told that the couple had breakfast then the young man decided to go for a swim,'' Colonel Boonlert said.

''His friend stayed in the room a little longer and when she joined him at the pool, she found him floating, without moving.''

The woman called resort staff. The man brought up his breakfast but failed to respond to attempts to revive him.

The couple had arrived on Phuket on Friday and were due to fly out today.

The man's body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

A spokesperson at the Chinese Consulate in Had Yai said today Kan Chgn's parents were flying to Phuket tomorrow night.

The parents would take their son's body home with them on Thursday.

So very sad. questions need to be asked about this "5 star" hotel. No life guard? No one saw anything?
Another tragedy that could be avoided.

What a tragic story to read this morning. All these drownings of Chinese and Korean folks, asks the question, do they know how to swim? Water seems like a no-go area for these tourists. Condolences to the bride to be, the family and friends of Kan Chgn. R I P.

Actually most Koreans and Japanese have no basic training in swimming. I lived 3 years in Korea, China and Japan and can count the people who knew how to swim with the fingers of my left hand.

Lifeguards ? You can't protect people from theselves 24 hours a day. We dont have lifeguards on our beaches till after about 9am. Also remember mum telling me as a kid..."no going in the pool for 1 hour after you've eaten"...but yes, very sad and there does seem to be a high percentage of "asian" drownings due to their poor swimming

He may well have suffered a stomach cramp, from going in too soon after having breakfast. Cramps, combined with minimal or no swimming skills, could have caused this.

Interestingly NOT one death, by drowning, has every been attributed to cramping, caused by swimming after eating, guys, just a little research next time, only takes about 30 seconds to google.
