The underage Danish tourist accused of insurance fraud today

Camera Catches Tourist In False Attack Claim

Wednesday, January 2, 2013
PHUKET: A Danish teenager holidaying on Phuket tried to commit an insurance fraud but failed dismally, police said today.

Officers, aware of the damaging effect on tourism associated with attacks on tourists, checked out the young man's claims with extra thoroughness.
'
The teenager will turn 18 later this month but Thai law specifies that minors accused of crimes cannot be named.

''Morty,'' as we will call him, went to the Kamala Police Station, on Phuket's west coast north of Patong, about 5pm today.

He told police that he had been attacked about 1.45am on New Year's Day in darkness at the northern end of Kamala beach, not far from the Novotel now under construction.

He had been to the countdown on Kamala beach, he said. Five Thais were involved in the attack, he said, with one man holding him from behind while others beat him.

He handed over his Omega watch, valued at 95,500 baht, two gold bracelets valued at 20,600 baht, an iPhone5 worth 29,150 baht and a credit card.

After robbing him, the gang carried him to the water's edge and threw him into the sea, ''Morty'' said.

Police questioned beach vendors, checked beachfront security camera footage and called ''Monty'' back for a second interview this evening.

They were less than happy with discrepancies between the first interview and the second interview.

Police took the matter further by checking security camera footage from the Swissotel Phuket, where ''Morty'' was staying with members of his family.

Footage taken earlier today showed ''Morty'' still wearing the Omega and the gold bracelets more than 24 hours after he claimed they had been stolen.

Confronted with the evidence, ''Morty'' confessed he still had the goods that he said were stolen and intended to make an insurance claim once he returned to Denmark.

Because he committed the crime of lying to police while still a minor, the penalty may not be as great as if he had tried it after his 18th birthday later this month.

''Because he committed the crime of lying to police while still a minor, the penalty may not be as great as if he had tried it after his 18th birthday later this month."

With any luck those celebrations will be in jail and he won't be released until his 19th birthday.

Congrats to the officers involved, great work. Insurance fraud by bad mouthing Thais. What a cynical move by this tool. Good he is an idiot criminal, that nothing will stick on Phuket if he will do a back home interview with a TV reality show show.

Good to see security videos show the real truth, too bad there are not more of real crimes that take place.

Too many people look upon insurance fraud as an easy way to "pay" for their holidays. Unfortunately quite a few guys i know myself are bragging about how much they got out of their travel insurance after every holiday, makes me mad...

Let's hope his insurance company back home is notified about this. Guys like these make the price for insurance higher for people not thinking; "let's screw the rich companies" but they are actually ripping off normal customers.

Morty you're a bad boy, but sure not a big thief such as most of Insurance Companies avoiding to pay as much as they can...a kick in the ass, and go make sand castles on the beach...

Wondering about the CCTV! The quality of these pictures must be much better, as the quality of the Bangla CCTV's usually is! Maybe the police should try to get more of them? Looks like, it would be a useful investment!

Morty is no criminal mastermind how was he going to claim on stolen goods no recipts no credit card transactions, we can only hope Morty is introduced to the Thailand penal system for his efforts, if not throw him back into sea.

Glad that Morty was exposed for what he was - a good job the CCTV was working for a change. It has a funny habit of fizzling out when others are involved in crime in Kamala.

What's wrong with the "picture"? We can not see who it is. People like that should not be able to enter Thailand again. We have already all the criminals we need down here.

Forms like Greed and attempts to steal like this should be heavily punished with a Big fine & a Huge penalty. Also all hours for investigation should be "capitalized" and claimed to this stupid "kid". Above it a big donation for advertising in Phuket promotion. All bad and negative things on Phuket should be honestly covered by the media & never covered up by Thai authorities like too often happens. But false & fake reports like from this Danish fool deserve Big media attention. Thank you Editor/Phuketwan.

I would think its enough, that he had a watch on his arm and bracelets on his neck, after the incident, but could not provide any other watch or bracelets. he used instead the stolen ones. Good possibilty.
