A RUSSIAN tourist and the owner of a Rawai bar have been charged by Phuket police with offences involving marijuana.
Acting on a tip-off, police went to the Tattoo Bar in Rawai about 7.30pm on Saturday, March 27. Officers had been told that majijuana was available for purchase there.
Police arrested the bar's owner, Anawat Jildpong, 33. Police say they found five kilos of marijuana and have charged him with possession and sale of the illegal drug.
While police were in the bar, they noticed one customer behaving suspiciously and as a result, questioned Russian Bondarcchenro Viatcheslav, 43. A small amount of marijuana (aka dope, ganga, mary jane) was found in an arm bag and the Russian, a tourist, was charged with possession of the drug.
While the use of marijuana has been decriminalised in many countries, in Thailand marijuana use and possession continues to rank as a crime, with severe penalties.
Visitors to Phuket are advised to avoid spoiling their holiday with an arrest and a jail term.
