Phuket Tour Bus Crashes in Phuket City: Many Injured, Dramatic Photo Album

A TOURIST bus crashed and overturned at Phuket City's Tesco-Lotus intersection this evening. First reports from two Phuketwan journalists on the spot said that there were many injured.

Ambulances, with sirens ripping the air, carried passengers to Phuket International Hospital, to Bangkok Hospital Phuket and to Vachira Hospital Phuket, all within two kilometres of the well-known crossing.

At the scene, paramedics and nurses treated large numbers of people while a crowd looked on. Petrol spread from the flipped bus, seeping across the road.

Initial reports, yet to be confirmed, said the passengers were from China. Celebrations of Chinese New Year are due to begin on Phuket next week.

Late tonight, all hospitals reported that none of the passengers were seriously injured. Two children, two women and a man were being treated in Phuket International Hospital. Eight adults were at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. None had been detained for treatment at Vachira.

It is believed the two-level 24-seat tour bus hit two vehicles while misjudging a corner at the intersection about 8pm, the bus coming downhill along the bypass road from the t-intersection with Thepkasattri Road.

Tesco-Lotus on a Sunday evening is packed with shoppers, many of whom, having heard the noise of the crash, looked on as tonight's drama unfolded.

A police officer at the scene said many buses had come to the island for Chinese New Year. The bus, carrying Vista Holidays signage, failed to take a left-hand turn towards Sam Kong and hit two vehicles, one a pick-up and another a saloon car, waiting for a green light to turn right into the bypass road.

The driver of the pick-up, Wichai Leelastwattanakul, said he had just been shopping with his father at Tesco-Lotus.

''We saw the bus fail to take the corner,'' Khun Wichai said. ''Then it hit us.''

The driver of the car, Thinnarat Prappracha, had finished work at Bangkok Hospital Phuket's Heart Centre and was heading home.

This is hardly news, more often a daily occurrence at this notorious intersection with traffic lights and all. Save the editorial space and just put up a pinned topic with daily tally.

Good part is that 3 major hospitals are nearby. I hope all victims are being well looked after. Not the best way to start the new year and probably innocent of any wrong doing themselves.

These buses are out of control.

One sped past me in a narrow street doing at least 60 kph just missing my side mirror by a inch.
I know they are in a rush to latex and sea shell tourist spending mills but safety and public concern should be considered.

Slow down!!!!

@ Editor.
Please forgive my skepticism but I am of the belief that most if not ALL Buses, Minivans and Pick-ups use diesel as fuel, very low flash point and relativity safe when spilt. Where does the petrol in your report come from? I'm sure not the "flipped bus across the road." were there passenger cars involved as well which mostly use Gasoline ( petrol) ??

Not being critical of your otherwise excellent reporting, just being curious.

Editor Comment:

You're half-right. Some of it was diesel. We will use ''fuel'' in future.

Thanks for report. Have called my wife at Naka Market to avoid Tesco junction.

Sunday morning, 9:30 am, waiting at those lights to go to Patong from Phuket Town...

The lights go green, nobody moves, I get impatient and watch as the green clock ticks down 3 seconds...

Then a fully laden pickup screams through the lights from the direction of the airport.

He must've been flashing his lights otherwise there would have been carnage.

Thank God the people at the front of my queue were looking his way.

Police, cameras and stiff fines should be used as well as notices on all approach roads.

No mention about me for providing you the news? Not that I am vain, but a mention would have been nice, unless you knew about it before I contacted Phuketwan?

Phuketwan always appreciates news alerts from readers, Tbs, but in this case we were on the way before your text arrived.

Instead of all this sudden helmet rule enforcement that I consider is just appeasing a "farang" window-dressing, how about a REAL enforcement of speed limits and other laws?

I've never even seen a posted sign for speed limits, do any exist?

The worst violators are the airport taxi vans whom constantly put my life in jeopardy, justifying it with capitalistic mantras.

Speed is a problem but most of the occupants of slabs in morgues each month are young male motorcycle riders, hence the attention to motorcycle safety first.

Capn Kirk - The speed limit in Thailand is the vehicle in front, and if that's not quick enough, overtake it.

As for many Thais dying on the road, how many are caused solely by themselves not involving some maniac driving a vehicle insanely fast and dangerously?
