Taxi drivers last week took action outside a large resort at Nai Thon to block a van from entering. The van had been called by a guest who was unaware that drivers outside the resort control a monopoly on what they do and where they travel.
''Chinese tourists called the van but they had no voucher,'' one of the drivers told Phuketwan. ''This happens here all the time,'' he said. ''By the way, where are your credentials to prove you are a journalist?''
Nine of the 10 taxis parked outside the resort on the day Phuketwan visited were illegal ''black'' taxis. The taxi driver who spoke to Phuketwan and asked to see the journalist's credentials drives an illegal taxi.
Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud opened a new community taxi service yesterday at the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort and said it represented an example of the move towards ''international'' standards on Phuket.
Cooperation between resorts, private enterprise, the local community and taxi drivers in Kata Noi was driving improvements to make tourists safer and more secure, he said. Sixty-three taxis from four group have signed on to be involved.
The governor said 80 percent of drivers have signed up and the other 20 percent are still ''in process.''
Phuket International Airport is seen as the key to changes in public transport on Phuket. A spokesman there today said changes that were to be implemented before January 1 had been delayed because Terminal X was still under construction.
The makeover of the airport's taxi system would come when the new terminal opens in mid January or at the end of January, the spokesperson said.
Registration of taxis that have permission to operate from the airport has closed, the spokesperson said.
Its just bla bla, taxi issue will never solve and they are not going to change... Government + Police officers are just acting to media showing they are working on it.. Yeah Santa clause is coming
