Phuket Taxi Drivers Blockade Resort 'Often' in Voucher Wrangle

Tuesday, December 24, 2013
PHUKET: Blockades have occurred ''often'' outside one resort in northern Phuket at almost the same time as a southern resort appears to be finding solutions to the ''no voucher, no access'' issue.

Taxi drivers last week took action outside a large resort at Nai Thon to block a van from entering. The van had been called by a guest who was unaware that drivers outside the resort control a monopoly on what they do and where they travel.

''Chinese tourists called the van but they had no voucher,'' one of the drivers told Phuketwan. ''This happens here all the time,'' he said. ''By the way, where are your credentials to prove you are a journalist?''

Nine of the 10 taxis parked outside the resort on the day Phuketwan visited were illegal ''black'' taxis. The taxi driver who spoke to Phuketwan and asked to see the journalist's credentials drives an illegal taxi.

Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud opened a new community taxi service yesterday at the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort and said it represented an example of the move towards ''international'' standards on Phuket.

Cooperation between resorts, private enterprise, the local community and taxi drivers in Kata Noi was driving improvements to make tourists safer and more secure, he said. Sixty-three taxis from four group have signed on to be involved.

The governor said 80 percent of drivers have signed up and the other 20 percent are still ''in process.''

Phuket International Airport is seen as the key to changes in public transport on Phuket. A spokesman there today said changes that were to be implemented before January 1 had been delayed because Terminal X was still under construction.

The makeover of the airport's taxi system would come when the new terminal opens in mid January or at the end of January, the spokesperson said.

Registration of taxis that have permission to operate from the airport has closed, the spokesperson said.

..and which resort was it? Newly built Pullmann or Naithonburi..? There are no other bog resorts there.
I've passed by there yesterday, and I would not say there are (visually) much more tourists than in last low season..

More hot air. And "community taxi services" - what are they exactly?
Nobody's prepared to take them on, not even the feeble DSI, so things go on just as they always have.

This comment is directed to all concerned consuls/ambassadors, when you have your next meeting, with Phumet's governor, please ask him and the DSI just what have they actually achieved, buy that I mean what has been achieved NOT what they say has been done. We get told so much has been done but in reality nothing, so far after many months, has changed. As many expats say, all words but no action.

Well well. I am Hat Yai and this morning I was speaking to some tuk tuk drivers at the hotel entrance. My question was, How do you regulate who waits at the hotel and who does not? There answer was short and sweet.Answer: "We have system that 2 tuk tuk wait at hotel. Then If you need taxi, one can call by reception."
So ok, if one tuk tuk leaves, another is called, answer: "Yes".
So how do you get this work so well? Simple answer to sum it all up, "Manners and respect."
I am now lost for words. Thank you.
PS. Do not correct my spelling in quotes, I am direct quoting from the Tuk Tuk driver who is a Thai National and English is not his native tongue.
