A check on drivers at Phuket airport has yet to be pursued as promised

Phuket Taxi Campaign On Hold Over a Telephone Call

Friday, March 30, 2012
PHUKET: Transport Department officers on Phuket are waiting on a telephone call from Phuket International Airport to start their campaign to rid Phuket of illegal taxis.

Officers intended to begin the campaign on Tuesday, but so far the invitation has not come from Airports of Thailand management to start work.

''We have to wait until we are asked,'' said Phuket Deputy Transport Director Wanta Pumararoskon. ''The airport is not managed by us.''

With the approval of Transport Minister, Jarupong Rungsuwan, Phuket airport General Manager Wing Commander Prathuang Somkhom and police from the Tachatchai station announced on March 13 that a crackdown on illegal taxis on Phuket would begin in two weeks.

Thousands of illegal taxis are believed to operate on Phuket, with drivers attracted by the high fares and relatively easy work. Often the private vehicles do not have appropriate insurance and are not equipped or maintained to international standard.

The high fares and poor attitude of the drivers of illegal taxis and tuk-tuks remain one of the largest sources of complaints from tourists about Phuket.

Many of the illegal vehicles operate in groups located at or near Phuket's resorts.

Seriously the police have to be invited to start a well publicized campaign to begin the cleanup of a long standing and internationally recognized problem within the Phuket transport industry.

You couldn't make this stuff up.

Probably the most unsurprising piece of news this year so far.

Authorities on Phuket must have some extraordinary qualities that I sorely lack because I don't think I could keep a square face while making all these useless statements about tackling whatever problem happens to be the flavor of the week.

Just another case of empty promises and no action. I guess Phuket is getting what it deserves.

Sure like they couldn't set up a check point right outside the airport were the airport would have no say (if they really wanted to).

I disagree with Khun Wanta. Laws exist that require the proper registration of vehicles used for hire and transport. The appropriate venue is the police department. It would be up to them to enforce and penalize violators of the law.

Amazing Thailand for sure. I expected some excuse but waiting for a phone call that did amaze me. Forget all the problems on Phuket, you always can get a good laugh to brighten up your day.

since when did the airport authority have jurisdiction over the highways of phuket. If unauthorised vehicles are being used to transport holidaymakers within phuket its up to the police to be vigilant and check out these vehicles aand protect the holiday maker from being ripped off and also unprotected as far as insurance is concerned.
