It's believed managers of the Surin resorts have been unable to make contact with Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusud this week to find out who takes ultimate responsibility for staging the event.
Organisers Sydictive Elements are selling tickets and hope the event, featuring electronic music on a floating stage, will attract 50,000 people.
Interestingly, Surin beach has a strong royal history and is the Phuket beach with the strongest connection to the royal family.
A large white pavilion in the style of a royal palace was erected on the beachfront to mark HM The King's 80th birthday.
The pavilion, close to the sands of Surin on land that was once part of a royal golf course, houses a photographic exhibition of the King's life.
Surin was selected as the site for the pavilion because it was one of the places the King visited when he toured Phuket with HM The Queen for the first time in 1959.
Historic photographs show the King and the Queen walking on the beach and greeting hundreds of Phuket people on the beachfront.
Surin has a royal history dating back decades to King Rama VII, who enjoyed golf and played on a nine-hole course there with notable people of the time, including leaders from other countries.
While the golf course, first on Phuket and the second in Thailand, has disappeared, the land remains as open public space.
All of Phuket's beaches, along with all of Thailand's beaches, belong to the King. All beaches are available for public use.
However, organisers of the New Year party have yet to explain who gave them permission to stage a private event for 50,000 people on Surin beach.
ACCORDING to a concert ticketing page at thaiticketmajor.com, the event will have ''two main stages as main attractions in the 48 hour nonstop party event. With a Mountain Stage and an Ocean Stage, party goers can enjoy two different ambiences in the same area.''
The festival ''will incorporate much of the latest technology integrated with explosive peaks for the ultimate theatrical shows syncronised directly with the ongoing sounds from the celebrity DJs.''
Tickets range in price from 2000 baht for an advance one-day pass to 9000 baht for a two-day deluxe pass bought at the event.
Phuketwan has been promised an update from organisers at 5pm today.
I can't believe this is going ahead. My friend's wedding is on the beach a couple of days before and now we risk out dream setting being overshadowed by scaffolding and speakers. Thanks PH.
