The young man died when his motorcycle slammed into a truck today

Phuket Store Worker Killed When He Slams Into Rear of Truck

Sunday, March 29, 2015
PHUKET: A young man wearing Home Pro uniform was killed when he slammed into the rear of a parked truck in Phuket's bypass road at lunchtime today.

The 18-wheel truck had parked near the Siam Nirimit show entrance so the driver could change a tyre, police said.

Varodom Wittayanidilok, 25, was wearing a helmet but that did not save him, according to a Kusoldharm Foundation paramedic who was quickly at the scene about 12.10pm.

Khun Varodom's body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

How does one run into the back of a parked truck, in broad daylight? Inattention, this young man paid the price, when will they ever learn...

Poor guy, a abrupt end of a young life, and so needless. R.I.P.
Many of the young motorbike riders drive faster than 80 km ph.Sometimes 1 hand for steering, other hand for that 'urgent'phone call. One stone or some substantial rubbish on the road and they fall/die. I also not understand how car drivers in broad daylight can fall asleep while driving in busy traffic.

Before every one puts all the blame on this young man. Did the lorry drive have his warning light on, did he do everything he could to warn people the he had broken down.Because from what I can see, I see nothing to warn people. It is so sad this young man lost his life.

Warning? Being 3 meters high, 2.5 m wide and stationary in the left lane in broad daylight. It would be hard to argue he was driving to a reasonable manner, according to road rules and couldn't see the truck!

agree

Traffic Rules back at home in Europe stipulates that lights should be switched to periodic flashing as warning signal and warning sign - triangle - should be put at least 25m behind a vehicle (in the city), and 50m beyond the city - if a vehicle is stopped on a roadway where stopping is prohibited.

Yes Sue,
I'm sure they also require registration, insurance, a theory test, periodic vehicle inspections,a licence and no overtaking on the left hand side.
But he was not in Europe was he?

Manowar,

True, Thailand is not in Europe, but some part of traffic rules are quite similar:

e.g. Section 56 of Land Traffic Act B.E.2522 requires in case of emergency stop due to mechanical failure at a place where stopping/parking is not allowed - I assume that was a case here, the truck stopped on a lane to change flat tyre - and driver "should display proper signs and signals prescribed by regulation" - that the truck's driver has failed to do.

Sue,
" where stopping/parking is not allowed"

There is no evidence in the article or pictures to confirm this situation.
If he couldn't see a truck almost 3 meters high which would be visible over the top of most other vehicles from a reasonable distance, how would he see ground placed safety signs where the view would be obstructed by most vehicles?
I thought road rules require a driver to travel at a speed to allow stopping within the limit of view and therefore whether moving or stationary, a vehicle running into the rear of another was always at fault, unless the front vehicle was reversing.
