Drugs, guns and money: Part of the haul from last night's sting

Phuket Sting Leads to Large Drugs Haul 'for Students,' Weapons

Tuesday, July 3, 2012
PHUKET: A sting involving the sale of ya ice methamphetamine valued at 3500 baht last night led Phuket police to a larger haul of drugs and weapons.

The cache was destined for sale to local Phuket high school and university students, police were told.

The arrest of Wirasak Nilawong, 24, led officers back to his room in Thalang where they discovered his girlfriend, Ketkeaw Bejangnara, 28.

In the couple's room at Baan Lipon, police also found 54.15 grams of ya ice, 649 ya bah tablets, a set of scales, drug-taking parephernalia, two hand-made thai pradit guns, several mobile telephones, a list of customers and a bank book for an account containing more than one million baht.

Khun Wirasak told police that he sold the drugs to local students. He was released from Phuket Prison earlier this year after serving a term for drugs offences.

For me its not the drugs that are the problem. The war on drugs is futile and will never be won.
But guns on the other hand are extremely worrying, so I am pleased to see that they are not on the street.

Guns drugs knifes are now the norm for students and young people. Very very worrying.

the second picture you can see the gun on the far left is carrying a silencer.
So very scary that guns with accessories like these are on the streets. i knew the island had a gun problem but didnt realise that they had access to these silencers. Makes it a near quiet.

these are not thai pradit guns but regular handguns. look at the .38 revolver cartridges also. a thai pradit shoots a shotgun shell.

It's good that the police make such busts but it's also worrying to see what youngsters want to have on Phuket.

Add to that soaring costs of living, increasing anti-foreign sentiment, opening up of Burma and AEC in 2015.

For a province that relies almost entirely on tourism those are some tough challenges to overcome.

I have no practical solutions to offer beyond a fundamental change of attitude both towards the very group of people that keep the whole economy here afloat and equally law enforcement and corruption.

I believe the time to implement the Singapore model is long overdue.

@andrew i think you'll find Thailand tolerates your presence in their country as a guest and does not need nor wish for any more than that. Just look at how tough it is for foreigners to live here, work, open business, buy property let alone those who wish to stay long term just as tourists. I think they make it perfectly clear, maybe you just don't understand.

@ graham

Indeed I don't understand what you are trying to say. Nothing you say differs from what I think or feel except that I claim that especially Phuket very much needs foreigners - both tourists and expats alike, so what am I missing here ?
