Phuket Splashdown! Jungle Waterpark Opening

Phuket Splashdown! Jungle Waterpark Opening

Friday, October 30, 2009
A NEW era begins on Phuket this year with the opening of the first resort theme park, the Splash Jungle Waterpark at West Sands Resort. Race you to the waterslides.

While pricing is still being determined, the 500 million baht waterpark will be open to the public and is capable of holding, we are told, 2500 people.

That's a pretty big splash for a holiday island that hasn't had much of a thrill since Dino Park. There's even a snow-making machine on the way, for cool tropical evenings.

Everything is on schedule for the opening of the waterpark on December 20.

Of equal importance, although perhaps not so essential to every resident on the island under the age of 90, is the opening of the West Sands Resort.

Initially 110 condos and villas will be available (along with half-price tickets to the waterpark for guests) and that's expected to grow to 447 units before the end of 2010.

What's also of interest is that West Sands now has its own management team in place. At one stage, Outrigger, which already manages the Outrigger Serenity Terraces Resort in Rawai, was to oversee the West Sands establishment.

In a sense, they've stayed in the classy upper Phuket five-star neighborhood, branding the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort and Villas at Laguna Phuket instead.

And the Outrigger will be open on December 1, along with the Andara Resort on the coast road in Kamala, making December a busy month for new five-stars to the north of the island.

But that waterpark is what will be the focus of attention closer to Christmas.

''We are confident that Splash Jungle will become a major attraction and a must-do activity for travelers,'' says Grace Yang-Mercer, Vice President of Splash Jungle Waterpark.

Seven mini-parks will offer splashes from around the world: the Inca Mayas, Africa, Asia, Turkey, Northern Europe, North America and the North Pole.

Additional features include three slides capable of handling 360 riders an hour, a lazy river meandering for 345 metres, a wave pool and other stuff. It covers 14 rai.

This park should be a great attraction. I just hope that they don't skimp of the safety issues. I took my family to Wild Wadi in Dubai and was very impressed with the large numbers of life-savers on duty. (Mainly Aussies and South Africans) If this is going to be anything like Wild Wadi, it will be a great family day out.

Yes, let's keep letting the developers go ahead until Phuket is one great big, soulless resort hotel with a slum next to it for the staff accommodation.

To avoid the inevitable tuc tuc /taxi scams, and the dangerous drivers, it would be a good idea to have a pick up service and entrance fee similar to that of FantaSea.

Why come to Phuket, Thailand leave the beach and do: Inca Mayas, Africa, Asia, Turkey, Northern Europe, North America and the North Pole?

Much better to do something authentic like John Gray's Sea Canoe, and at least he helps Phuket, cares, genuinely cares about the environment, lives here and didn't even have to destroy any pristine land to set up his "must do attraction."

Am I the only person who thinks this will fail miserably?

Phuket will be littered with even more glossy flyers.

And how about our water shortages in the high season? Do they have first dibs?

Different strokes for different folks. I think it's a great idea and will improve the island.

Bet they aren't too happy about the other WaterPark opening shortly afterwards in Kathu which will be far easier to get to.

How much the ticket for adult and child?

Every time we go to Bali we enjoy Water Bom. Bigger and more rides than Phuket.

What makes it even nicer is that a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children under 12 is cheaper than a one day pass here for adults.

Editor: Bit hard to tell for sure what will happen until the Phuket park opens and people vote with their feet and wallets.
