PHUKET: Marine Police say their daily enforcement of safety laws on speedboats at Phuket's seven tourist piers is paying dividends with a marked improvement in attitude and consistent standards now being achieved. Lieutenant Phanya Chaichana led visits to Boat lagoon and Royal Phuket Marina today. ''Tourists are more comfortable when they see us checking and it has been a while since anyone tested positive to drugs,'' he said. ''Regular enforcement is delivering results.''
Authorities can say whatever they want, only time will tell if the boats and their crew really are safer or not.
On another note, somewhat on/off topic, when at a 7-11 today at 2.45pm (alcohol sales ban time) I observed a Thai man buying 3 cans of LEO beer, hop into his Toyota Hiace Minibus (Blue plate # 1049), open one can and drinking out of it before driving off.
The van had no customers and I sure hope he was not on his way to pick up any either.
As much as I'd like to see strict, zero tolerance law enforcement in everything related to safety, a 180 degree change in attitudes is also needed.
Sadly I don't see either one happening anytime in the near future, if ever.
