Public Health will distribute 300,000 free helmets in Bangkok, Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat. [The campaign began in Phuket City earlier this year and goes Phuket-wide from January 1.]

DSI chief Tharit Pengdit said the continuing investigation into the death of Muramoto during the Bangkok red-shirt protests in May could be affected by disclosure.

monstersandcritics.com Thailand's image as a stable, cohesive, easy-going and somewhat feudalistic Asian country that managed to avoid colonialism and deftly adapt to every global challenge thrown its way took a beating in 2010. After the quelling of the red shirts in May, Thailand has settled in to an ''eerie false calm,'' according to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University.

The only thing is that they are not proper helmets, only plastic hats!
Those things on the children's heads would not pass any safety standard in any country that has helmet laws.

Phill, Awareness is what it's about at this stage. Finding the money for proper full-face helmets remains something the average Thai family can only dream about. Westerners, of course, do not have to ask: ''Do I feed the family today, or buy a helmet?'' The giveaway helmets are to Thai standard, so they pass Thai helmet laws. It's a great start.

Well said Ed - some people seem to just want to find the doom and gloom in every story. As you say - its a start. I'm not a motorcycle rider myself, I prefer the safety of four wheels, but any initiative is better than none.

This is fantastic news, I can't tell you how pleased Shane and I am. Yesterday was one year since Shane had his accident. We never thought things would happen so quickly. Good on the police force and government. One of the most importing things is to plant the seed of wearing a Helmet. Again for all the negative people, you cannot compare Thailand with any other country but Thailand. Every country have their own laws. You should praise them for the effort they are putting in.Lives have been saved, and that is fantastic.

Why not rewrite the page code, so that each blurb leads to the article from which its news is extracted? It's d*mned frustrating to see a general URL like bbc.co.uk next to a paragraph detailing a very specific article from that site - give us the specific link, not something so general!

I think the way to distribute these helmets should be tied to the police system of catching offenders: supply police with brightly colored *shame* helmets, with unique tracking numbers on each helmet (in case they're discarded, to track offenders). Let the police SELL these helmets immediately to helmetless drivers, instead of just levying fines and then sending the (still helmetless) riders on their way.
