A TOURIST walking along a road in Old Phuket Town has told police he was slashed with a knife in fighting off two bag-snatchers early today.
Finn Heikko Antero Malkki, 59, received 12 stitches for the wound at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City before telling police what happened.
Mr Malkki, a backpacker, said that he was walking along Phang Nga Road about 6.30am near the On On Hotel when the two men pulled up on a motorcycle and tried to steal his shoulder bag.
He resisted, police were told. One of the men pulled a knife and slashed his arm before they rode off empty-handed, Mr Malkki said.
Police were checking for witnesses along the route from the Phuket Town bus station where Mr Malkki said he got off the service from Had Yai early this morning.
