Phuket Road Toll Trending Down

SIX deaths in one collision last weekend may end a trend so far in 2011 to a lower Phuket road toll. Official figures for March - released today by the Public Health Department - showed 13 people died on Phuket roads last month.

The March tally took the total for the year so far to 30, a considerable drop over the total of 39 in the first quarter of 2010 and the 42 deaths in the same period of 2009.

The number of injured on Phuket tallied 1204 in March - an improvement over the 1517 people recorded as injured in January.

Three people drowned in waters on or around Phuket in March, taking the tally for the year so far to 10. This is up on the figure of seven drownings in the first quarter of 2010, although well down on the total of 17 for the same period of 2009.

The drowning figure of 12 for March 2009 included seven deaths that occurred when a diving live-aboard overturned and sank in a Phuket storm.
