Erna Dahlan, who was due to celebrate her birthday on Wednesday

Phuket Road Horror: Expat Mother-to-Be and Son Killed Under Patong Concrete Truck

Monday, January 9, 2012
PHUKET: A Phuket expat woman has been killed in a motorcycle crash with the added tragedy of being eight months pregnant when crushed beneath the wheels of a concrete truck.

An Indonesian married to an Englishman, Erna Dahlan, 29, and her son were killed instantly in Nanai Road, Patong, near the Royal Crown Resort about 3.40pm yesterday, said a Kusoldharm Foundation rescue worker.

The rescue worker said it was unclear whether the woman and her husband, David Dahlan, 42, were Phuket residents or tourists.

The mother-to-be would have celebrated her 30th birthday this Wednesday.

The driver of the cement truck, travelling fast downhill in Nanai Road, tried to run away but was apprehended by residents and onlookers. He was charged with careless driving resulting in a death.

The man, Aroon Boonaburi,49, is being held by officers at Kathu Police Station, which oversees Patong.

A high proportion of recent motorcycle deaths have been visitors, with two expats among the six deaths recorded on Phuket in the Seven Days of Danger safety campaign that concluded on January 4.

A Swedish man was killed in a motorcycle crash soon after.

Although the seven-days toll increased on the four deaths recorded last high season, official figures on Phuket's road toll are expected to show an improvement in 2011 on the previous year.

The figures, compiled by Public Health, have been delayed in compilation. However, three-quarters of the way through the year, to the end of September, the roads death toll for Phuket totalled 91 so far compared to 101 in 2010 and 122 in 2009.

Unfortunately heard and saw the ambulance going to this one. It's quite common to see the cement trucks barreling down roads and running lights with no concern for other road users. I realise they are under pressure to get loads through but its no excuse for dangerous driving, and perhaps the bosses of the cement companies should review their practices. I remember that seeing a bad accident in kamala last year when two motorcyclists slowed down to stop for a red light, just as the cement truck behind them accelerated to run the light - with unfortunate consequences.

Does anyone know the actual punishment/penalty for reckless or careless driving causing death? Or perhaps impaired driving causing death? Does the punishment become more severe if the driver tries to flee? I think it is a small fine or compensation. Whatever it is, it's clearly not enough, and driving habits will not change until the punishment fits the crime. Oh yeah, it would be nice if the police actually enforced the rules, but that is another story.

Sure, I have seen my fair share of cement trucks being driven badly. But something I see even more often is foreigners driving motorbikes even worse than any cement truck. I see that every day, tourists mostly, that drive motorbikes without any prior experience and drive really dangerously. The traffic here is not like something you would find on Koh Lanta or Samet. Here the rythm of the traffic is very high, other vehicles are driving very fast and you really need to be on your toes. I'd say it's at least as intense as driving in central Bangkok. Just because you CAN easily rent or buy a motorbike here does not mean you SHOULD. I'm a pretty experienced motorist, and I would never consider getting on a motorbike and drive to Patong from where I live in Kathu. I might go to the 7-eleven in my soi, a few minutes ride away, but that's it.

Christian, I do agree with you that a lot of tourists should not rent bikes in Thailand but Dave was a very experienced driver. Dave and Erna lived in Thailand and i doubt very much that he would have been driving recklessly with his pregnant girlfriend on the back. Clearly the man running from the scene of the crime says GUILTY! Enra was such a lovely beautiful person inside and out, this is the worst tragedy! R.I.P both of you.

The article says a high number of expats are being killed on the roads driving motorbikes. You think this is just a coincidence? And where in the article does it say the husband was driving? In any case, putting a woman who is 8 months pregnant IS reckless even you are Valentino Rossi. The only excuse for driving a motorbike is you can't afford a car, so poor people must use a motorbike. Anybody else doing it is just out of their mind.

I have had one serious off where I was nearly killed on my Ninja, and that was when a cement truck u-turned in front of me when I completely had the legal right of way. Fortunately I was able to swerve around him and ditch it into some grass. Had I collided with him at 60kph I surely would not have survived.
