Do you know this man? He died on a road but police are unsure how

Phuket Riddle of Expat's Body on the Road in Motorcycle Crash

Sunday, January 15, 2012
PHUKET: Police are seeking to identify a Western man whose body was found on an isolated stretch of road in Rawai early today.

Police believe the man, with distinctive brushed-back grey hair, could have been the victim of a heart attack. He carried no identification and his wallet contained just a small amount of cash.

The man, aged 45 to 60, was wearing a blue top, white jeans and brown shoes. He was found on the Kata-Sai Yuan Road, near the Karon lookout, in southern Phuket.

A red helmet was found near the man's Honda Click motorcycle. Phuketwan publishes the photograph above in the hope someone will recognise the man from his clothing.

He had suffered a wound to the front of his head. Police have not discounted the possibility that he was the victim of an early-morning attack on a steep stretch of the lonely road that would require him to travel slowly.

The man was travelling from Rawai towards Kata, on Phuket's west coast.

His death is the latest in a series of deaths involving motorcycles that has killed an alarming number of expats on Phuket since Christmas.

His body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

Phuketwan supports Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM) an action group that advocates compulsory wearing of safety helmets and greater awareness on Phuket roads.

This is so sad heart attack?? more like knocked of his bike. The police surely could track his name by his number plate.Or where the bike was bought from, or from the previous owner. That's how a Vachira nurse tracked my son. So if she can do it, the police could.

I moved to Phuket 12 years ago, and at the time the locals told me never to drive this particular stretch of road alone at night. Since then there has been several accounts of robberies every year, some even on back to back nights, or several in 1 week. It is nice to see that the police are already leaning towards calling it a heart attack, I suspect that nothing has changed in 12 years, and likely won't change over the next 12 ... RIP

Agree Monica.... More like its the same thing that happened to your son Shane, only they are getting a bit smarter now by leaving a wallet with a small amount of cash on his person. gone are the thousand baht notes and mobile phone.

There's no doubt about it..Phuket is a dangerous place, especially riding at night alone in non built up areas.

" Do you know this man "
Possibly a retouched photograph of his face could be published that could jog someone's memory or knowledge.
Sorry but to me your published photo is like a group of big game hunters with a trophy shot. Not very tasteful when his next of kin get to know who it was although I feel that was not the intent.

Death in a country that is not your own means the person will be subject to that country's culture, whether they like it or not. The Western way of death is different but no more appealing.

To the editor.
Since when is it Thai culture to stand around a corps to do some head shots?

The manner of how the dead are treated is part of every country's culture, Anonymous, even though some ignorant people imagine culture is limited to art, dance and music.

The police here are highly trained professionals, who can diagnose probable cause of death, unlike our 'untrained' western police, who would need to INVESTIGATE things a bit more at great expense to the community.
OMG did I write that rubbish...

Ed, on the basis that family and friends of the deceased will be reading this article this is not about different country culture but about respect for these readers at a time of maximum distress. The photo 1. Does not achieve identity has you confirm identity has been established 2 In bad taste 3.Many more foreigners read this paper than Thais therefore you should appeal to your mass market. Please remove the photo.

Editor Comment:

We don't plan on changing our approach. The next time, the identity of the person may well be resolved by a photograph such as this one. Questions of taste are always a matter for individual readers and vary widely, just as our audience varies widely. ''Foreigners'' are not all in one category, with one set of values. Why imagine you speak for all non-Thais? The use of portrait photographs of the faces of the dead, for example, with eyes retouched and reopened, is widespread . . . not exactly tasteful, but extremely helpful in restoring an identity. So at times can be photographs like this one.

Was the man identity find or still nothing? How comes nobody has shown up yet? So sorry.....
