PHUKET is making the most of its advantages at the ITB Berlin travel and trade fair in Germany, with a large team selling the island to more than one million expected visitors.
While the show also concludes tomorrow, the same day as red shirts mass for a protest in Bangkok, Phuket's large team believes the protest can do Phuket no harm.
Bhuritt Maswonngssa, Vice President of the Phuket Tourist Association, told Phuketwan that the show had been a boon for Phuket.
''We've had lots of bookings,'' he said. ''Phuket remains a popular destination for Europeans especially.
''People are mostly able to realise that Phuket and Bangkok are a long way from each other, and that Phuket does not have the same kind of political turmoil.''
He said Phuket, with its international airport and direct charter flights, continued to be a popular place among agents and customers of all kinds.
This year Phuket doubled the size of its stand at the show and sent a high-powered delegation that included Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob and the Chief Executive of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, Paiboon Upatising. More than 45 resorts also sent representatives.
Phang Nga, Krabi and Thailand generally also had large contingents this year, with competition more intense worldwide because of the financial crisis.
