Saphan Hin park undergoes a transformation for road racing July 20-22

Phuket Road Racers Get Set at City Park

Saturday, July 14, 2012
PHUKET: Median road dividers are going in all over Phuket for safety but at Saphan Hin park in Phuket City they are coming out . . . for the high-speed and sharp curves of the Toyota Motor Sport Series.

Road racing and burning rubber returns to Phuket with up to 50 Toyota-brand cars thrilling onlookers from July 20-22.

Next weekend's racing means that the median strips at Saphan Hin must go so the cars can make the most of the conversion of the park to a temporary Phuket City race track.

Plenty of driving skills will be demostrated off the track, too, with the three-day event ideal for rev-heads and those who have never seen cars race at speed.

Thousands of Phuket people are expected to turn out to see what not to do on Phuket's roads.

The popular road through Saphan Hin will be closed for race practice from noon to 4pm on July 20, and again from 7am to 4pm as Phuket gets serious about motor racing.

The Phuket qualifiers are on the Saturday withe the finals scheduled for next Sunday.

Expect a few disruptions on Phuket after the event as authorities return the median strips back the way they were.

"... those who have never seen cars race at speed."

I.E. those that have never spent 5 minutes on a Thai road.

I miss this every year. Sounds fun. I will have to make it this year.
