Shot police officer Nikom arrives at a Phuket hospital early today

Phuket Pub Shooting: Policeman Wounded, Hunt for Men

Tuesday, June 19, 2012
PHUKET: Police across Phuket were hunting four men who escaped on foot after an officer was shot in a wild dispute at a pub early today over music.

The policeman, Nikom Jeanyear, was hit in the neck and grazed by a couple of other shots when the men opened fire from outside the Saraphanplang pub in Patak Road, close to Chalong Circle.

The men, leaving the pub at 1.45am, expressed their anger at not having the music played that they requested by shooting back into the pub from a distance of about 25 metres.

The thaipradit homemade gun, which fires up to nine rounds, scattered shots mostly at officer Nikom, who was at the pub with friends.

He was rushed first to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City then transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, also in Phuket City, where his condition was reported to be satisfactory today.

Police say they have arrested one of the five men and are continuing the hunt for the other four, who escaped on foot when their green Mitsubishi was stopped at a Karon checkpoint.

Police have charged Supanet Sukkeaw, 28, with attempted murder, although he denies he fired the gun.

I really was waiting a long time when something will happen in this pub. Every other locality on Phuket have to close latest at 2am. Not this pub. The Chalong police station is just 400 meters in distance, they have 365 days a year life music until 4 am. When the music closes finally at 4 am, it needs another hour until the last drunken guests will pass away. Time will bring if the focus now is on this pub, how long the music will play the next nights, until grass will cover this story and they will go back to the usual behavior.

Whistle-Blower It's a pub and very good restaurant and believe it or not some policemen are human and have free time!

Unbelievable uncontrolled violence - guns (illegal) & alcohol - a potent cocktail. It is worrying for innocent passersby who might get hit in the crossfire. It is not the first time & won't be the last. It makes for bad reading & publicity abroad.

Nip - Usually I disagree with half the ramblings of Whistle-Blower, but this time I agree fully.

The point he was trying to make was not that the police should not have fun in their free time, as they should, they deserve it as much as anyone else.

The point is, what are the police doing at a club / restaurant that is flouting the rules and laws by staying open past the legally mandated hours, serving alcohol past legal hours, playing music past legal operating hours, etc.

Police are obliged by the nature of their job to act as upstanding citizens and maintain the rule of law regardless of whether or not they are on or off duty.

I'm sure if a bar was operating at all hours of the night near your home keeping your family awake, you would probably be a bit upset to find that some of the patrons that are contributing to the business and noise are off duty police whose job it should be to ensure that the pub is closed at the proper time.

Behaviour of the Saraphanplang Pub as before. Weekend time is businesstime. So, on Friday night there was again tremendous loud life music until 4 am with loud noise from leaving drunken guests until 5 am. Just 3 days they finished a little bit earlier and now they are back as before. It's moneytime again for the only Pub with lifeband I know at Phuket island.

@ Happy Chris
"Every other locality on Phuket have to close latest at 2am."
"for the only Pub with lifeband I know at Phuket island."
Both statements are indicating, that you don't know much, about (il-)legal nightlife at Phuket island.
