PHUKET: A total of 175 inmates were released today from Phuket Provincial Prison, to be greeted in some cases by tearful family and friends.
The early releases, in honor of the birthday of HM The Queen and the 60th birthday of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, were accompanied by reductions in sentences for 575 other Phuket prisoners.
The number of inmates in the Phuket institution had risen to 2003, triggering unprecedented overcrowding at the jail built more than a century ago tp house 750 wrongdoers.
Sixteen women were among the prisoners freed today. HM The Queen's birthday last weekend also marked the annual Mother's Day.
Phuket Prison Commander Rapin Nichanon said he believed Phuket will eventually be granted the budget for a new prison, erected and run to international standards.
Designs have been created and land set aside for the new facility at Bang Jo, on the site of the existing detention centre and prison farm in eastern Phuket.
