PHUKET: A total of 94 percent of delegates to the rolling Amway China rewards seminars on Phuket so far have been delighted with Phuket and their holidays, officials revealed today.
The Amway event is bringing close to 16,000 delegates to Phuket in the biggest event of its kind, the first at an international resort desination rather than a big, stylish city.
Amway China Vice President Martin Liu told Phuket's media at Phuket FantaSea today that the month-long program from April 15 to May 16 deployed 69 charter flights and 130 regular flights to carry the huge number of delegates to Phuket and back to seven regions of China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Phuket's diversity represented its biggest attraction, with Phuket regarded as ''a City of MICE'' and 10 percent of events and exhibitions tourists to Thailand now making Phuket their destination.
Tourists coming for MICE spent two or three times what normal tourist paid, the Phuket journalists were told, and the amount spent by the Amway delegates on Phuket was likely to exceed 2.5 billion baht.
The event had taken about one billion baht to structure, Mr Liu said at FantaSea in Kamala, one of seven shows that require up to 100 minivans to transport delegates there.
Most of the delegates are staying in the Laguna Phuket sanctuary, where China Nights and gala dinners are being held 21 times over the month that Amway delegates are coming.
Chaiyaporn Pattanarak, chief of development at Phuket Provincial, said it was a great sign that Amway had picked Phuket. Billions of baht in other business from China was expected to flow to Phuket as a result.
Coming up in Bangkok from May 6-May 9 is an international Rotary convention, and many delegates to that event are expected to also holiday with their families on Phuket before or after the conference.
