''Posting'' motorcycles all over the country proves popular on Phuket

Phuket Post Revs Up Motorcycle Deliveries

Sunday, May 31, 2009
EXPATS and Thais are making more use of Thailand Post, where the delivery of motorcycles to all parts of the country has become a specialty.

An EMS pickup service for fast-track special mail from Thalang, Phuket City and Kathu post offices is also attracting plenty of new business, says Nattapong Satirak, the Head Postmaster at Phuket Post Office.

He says the Post Office is just as reliable as branded competitors and not nearly as expensive. Expats already make up 30 percent of the post office business on Phuket, he says.

One of the bright new attractions is Logispost, which ships motorcycles back and forth across Thailand at low cost.

The service once operated out of Phuket every three days, but since March 15 it has become a daily service. Little wonder, with the numbers of motorcycles being transported in and out increasing so rapidly.

Last year 4548 motorcycles were shipped off the island through Logispost while 3188 arrived. In the first four months of this year, 1752 have arrived while another 1447 have been trucked out.

Mostly they belong to workers moving north or south or students off to college in some other part of the country. About 45 units can fit on a truck.

Chumporn province is the hub for motorcycle dispersal, and from there they are dispatched in every direction.

Owners can check progress online through www.thailandpost.com and post office officials call when your motorcycle arrives.

The first seven days of parking is free, after which you are charged 25 baht a day. But if the motorcycle is not picked up within 14 days, back it goes . . .

The post office was once a source of constant complaint from expats, but not any more.

Few countries still have six-day home delivery, and by the end of June, installation of CCTV cameras in the Phuket City Post Office will improve security still further.
