Where the claret flowed after dinner in Phuket City last night

Phuket Policeman Shoots Diner as Fight Follows a Meal

Wednesday, January 18, 2012
PHUKET: An argument at a Phuket City restaurant led to an off-duty policeman shooting and seriously wounding another diner in a drunken dispute last night.

Police officer Somchote Suksawat and a friend shared a meal and a drink at the Chor Ka Cher restaurant, near the intersection of Phang Nga Road and Surin Road, (close to the Mazda and Honda retail outlets) and had a disagreement with four men at a nearby table.

When the policeman headed off into the night about 11.30pm, the other men followed, Officer Somchote later told colleagues.

The four men then used bottles and sticks to beat the officer. As the altercation became serious, officer Somchote noticed one of the men was carrying a gun so he drew his own weapon and fired.

Somsak Keawsrisom, 41, the main antagonist, was hit three times in the legs and once in the chest as officer Somchote fired six bullets.

''I fired to defend myself,'' said officer Somchote. ''I was aiming to wound him, not to kill him.''

Khun Somsak was being treated in Vachira Phuket Hospital today as police continued inquiries into the shooting.

Officer Somchote is based at Phuket City Police Headquarters. The shooting comes after two handgun assassinations last week triggered increased concern about the prevalence of weapons on Phuket.

Another fine example of Thai mentality. What "real" police force would find it acceptable to allow an officer to carry a gun off duty and while under the influence of alcohol. Yep... in Thailand!

Yet more bad news that will spread around doing even more damage to the already fragile tourist industry.

Graham your comments about Thai mentality are racist. As for a "real" police force, a great many New York City police officers carry their gun while off duty. And yes, these kinds of incidents have happened there too. Maybe time for you to head back to your home country, no?

Graham, There are some "real" police forces that require their officers to carry a weapon while off-duty.

It remains to be seen whether this officer was indeed acting in self defense or not.

graham minds are like parachutes they work best when kept fully open until the full facts are known which you wont find in the media these are found in courtrooms where the full enquiry and facts are presented

Reading this article you hear a tale of a poor policeman that was defending himself? Who in their right mind attacks an armed policeman? It would be interesting to hear some statements from witnesses at the restaurant.

He said he didn't want to kill him yet he still managed to fire 6 rounds at him. hmmm. Seems like a lot of bullets to fire at someone you just wanted to wound.
