Fingered, the security guard who turned thief at a Phuket resort

Phuket Police Solve Russians' Resort Room Theft by Asking Security Guard

Thursday, May 2, 2013
PHUKET: Police have busted a case of room theft at a Phuket resort by asking the security guard. He turned out to be the thief.

Three Russians went for a swim in the pool at the Phuket Island View Hotel in Karon, on Phuket's holiday west coast, and discovered when they returned that the room had been raided.

Hotel staff and the three Russians did not have far to go to report the disappearance of cash and valuables - the Karon Police Station is right next to the hotel, on Phuket's beach road.

''We started our investigation as we always do, with the security guard,'' an officer told Phuketwan.

''The security guard in this case seemed uncomfortable about telling us what he had seen and what security cameras might show.

''So we asked to look in his bag - and found the loot.''

Three passports, $2600 in cash, three mobile telephones and a driving license were what security guard Wanchalee Teaptad, 26, had stolen.

The goods were returned to Artem Morachev and Igor Materskiy, both 25, and Anton Kornishin, who celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday.

As the arrest followed the snaring of a high-society resort room thief who drove a mercedes and admitted to about a dozen robberies at Phuket resorts, it was a good week for law enforcement on Phuket.

Officers did not name the security firm hired by the hotel to protect its guests and their rooms.

55555 !!! How clever this thief disguised as a security guard ! I wonder what references this fellow gave to the security firm to get the job (or would be better to say 'what references the security firm asked...')

So the outcome of the story has revealed a very interesting distinct thief profile, a security guard who drives a mercedes is likely to be a thief.

In developed nations anyone aspiring to become a security guard needs a police clearance and is subject to rigorous background checks, drugs tests and the lot.

I doubt there's such a system in place in Thailand. Adding to the difficulty of keeping records of people is that in Thailand it's very common and easy for people to legally change their names and some may be on their 10th name by their 50th birthday.

Police is not much better. Some years back we had a series of break-ins on one of our properties, which seemed strange because several residents are Thai police officers.

Upon installing CCTV cameras we finally caught the thief, who turned out to be one of the police officers living on the property.

We were advised pressing charges would not be in our best interest and he still lives there. Stolen property was only partially returned.

Whilst theft is very bad and I am not condoning it would be good see hotels offering safes and in this day and age with ATMS to carry $2600 in cash is not needed and clearly is tempting as in many cases in it about 6 months salary for many Thais. Would he feel comfortable carrying an average 6 months salary in Western Terms of say 25,000USD Less cash around and less people get tempted and therefore less theft.

Always take cash myself as the rate on the street is always much better that what any bank will offer you. Sure, there is the risk of theft but that is what travel insurance is for.

I also Carry Cash, About 500 or Up to 700 because of a better Exchange rate so 2600 between 3 people is not a lot. And as far as tempting Thais, I don't believe people are flashing the cash to them.
So a thief does Not need temptation, they are just a thief. There are good and bad people every where.
What I find odd is the light prison time they do for something like this.
