PHUKET: A car bomb scare and emergency drill at Phuket International Airport about 9am tomorrow should make a parking space even more difficult to find than usual.
Not far from the airport entrance yesterday, police were checking every vehicle and pulling over those they suspected of being illegal taxis.
Perhaps some of these were Phuket ''bombs'' on four wheels of a different kind.
Phuket airport General Manager Wing Commander Prathuang Somkhom, said last week that the successful tenderer for the new airport expansion should be known by August 23.
Today he said that there are apparently two names in the ring as constructors for the job that will take the capacity of Phuket from 6.5 million arrivals and departures to beyond 12 million, with the winner yet to be chosen.
And no start date yet. Phuketwan predicts that it will be 2016 before the new five billion baht international terminal opens.
After all, the project was announced in 2008 and in the four years since, the only practical sign of progress has been the creation of a ''wave'' design for the new terminal building.
Airports of Thailand is also struggling to refurbish Don Muang Airport in Bangkokwith speed.
Because Suvarnabhumi Airport is almost as crowded as Phuket, AoT wants 14 airlines to use Don Muang. So far only AirAsia has signed on.

Parking at the airport is problematic, particularly after 1000. A solution would be to build a multi-story parking garage. I am sure that the revenues presently generated from parking could cover the cost.
