While Phuketwan and other news media usually report most expat deaths, we believe the drowning of Wang Jian Jun at Koh Yao on June 8 by drowning has previously gone unrecorded.
The list covers all cases where police have been called.

Phuket Expat Deathlist Topped by Seven British Men
Five suicides and one (other) hanging, which could be suicide. I remember a few stories in other publications over the years about mental health in Phuket and I note that Phuket Wan is commendably proactive when reporting suicides by suggesting those feeling suicidal should seek help. Can't help feeling that this "paradise" is anything but for some people. Transient relationships, competitiveness, alienation, a beer or 10, or a bag of grass or a gram of coke are rather easy to come by and do little, nothing, to help long term people who may be a touch "fragile". Perhaps a concerted effort between health authorities, private hospitals, consular officials and the media might go some way to helping. Phuket Wan did well with encouraging a change of attitude over motorcycle helmets; could it help tackle mental health?

Editor Comment:
Friends and family are the frontline. Once people are away from them, especially at an emotional loose end in a different country, the stresses can mount - even though communication is easier these days. I certainly wish there was more we could do, Tanya.
