PHUKET: Phuket's Police Commander, Major General Pekad Tantipong, may be on the move after two years to Region 8 police headquarters, say insiders.
A decision is expected next week about senior police postings on Phuket. It's understood that 18 police officers have applied for the position of superintendent of Kathu Police Station.
The station, which oversees the popular Phuket nightlife hub of Patong, is currently overseen by Superintendent Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao.
Kathu Police Station won the annual award for being the best police station in Southern Region 8 and is clearly a popular posting.
The new Phuket Police Headquarters opened under the command of Major General Pekad Tantipong in Phuket City in 2009.
Major General Pekad is the only Phuket police commander to have experienced the three-monthly Phuket honorary consuls' meetings, which have been happening for two years now.
Major General Pekad arranged for all incidents involving deaths of expats or arrests on serious charges to be notified to his office. His office also releases a detailed account of expat deaths and arrests and cases in which expats are victims.
He has overseen the introduction of mediation at Phuket police stations, and overseen the Phuket ''100 percent helmet'' campaign. Deaths on Phuket roads have fallen considerably under his tenure.
Major General Pekad has managed to respond to requests from the honorary consuls for a female police officer to more sympathetically deal with claims of rape.
However, requests for an increase in the number of police on the island - too few at 1100 officers for an international holiday destination of Phuket's size - have yet to be met.
All the new appointments, approved by the Yingluck Shinawatra Government, are expected to all be known by mid-January.
In a lighter moment, Major General Pekad went toe-to-toe with a top kickboxer earlier this year in an exhibition bout for a good cause, and often makes donations at charity events.

And we all no why Patong is a popular posting don't we boys and girls.
