Phuket Police Bust 'Drug Suppliers' to Patong

Friday, October 15, 2010
THE DEPUTY leader of Kathu Council has been arrested in a big sting that police say will leave tourists in Patong without their regular drug suppliers.

Somkorn Somboon, 44, was nabbed last night when he met a police officer in a laneway near the Kathu intersection, in central Phuket. Two other alleged drug peddlers to Patong tourists were nabbed earlier in the evening.

The evening began with the arrest of Wiitaya Kinjamps, 34, around 7pm at a no-name apartment in Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, Patong. According to police, he was in possession of six one-gram bags of yah ice and 30,000 baht.

At 9pm, Sineenart Nipat, 39, was arrested in Soi Bansan, behind Jungceylon. She had eight bags of yah ice and 14,000 baht, police said - and according to them, she named Khun Somkorn as her drugs supplier.

In the sting operation that followed, an officer telephoned Khun Somkorn, asked for some yah ice, and was told to put 11,000 baht into Khun Somkorn's bank account.

Having done that, the officer rode a Honda Wave to meet Khun Somkorn near the Kathu intersection about 11pm last night.

When he was arrested, Khun Somkorn was carrying three one-gram package of >yah ice, police said.

All three alleged dealers have been held without bail after court appearances today, said Lieutenant Akanit Panpitak. He said police believed they were long-term suppliers of drugs to Patong tourists.

The deputy leader of Kathu Council turns out to be a drug pusher.

I am shocked.

"Somkorn was carrying three one-gram package of yah ice, police said"

Remember the "alleged" criminal must be given the benefit of the doubt.

What do you say editor, maybe the Deputy Leader just found the drugs on the floor and was at that very moment on his way to the local police station.
Let's make him "Good Egg of Phuket 2010" while we are at it......

We've reported what the police said. In most countries, most sensible people wait to hear what the court decides about the guilt or innocence of the person involved. Police do get it wrong sometimes. That's what I say. Perhaps you come from a place where it's different?

Hey, Ed! Perhaps you missed this bit in the story:

[quote]In the sting operation that followed, an officer telephoned Khun Somkorn, asked for some yah ice, and was told to put 11,000 baht into Khun Somkorn's bank account.

I'd say he was caught bang to rights, although I can hear his story already:

"I thought the the phone call came from a corrupt policeman so I told him to put 11,000 baht in my account as a test. Then I got a colleague to buy some yah ice so we could set a trap for the policeman but instead the officer said it was me who was a pusher. I was only doing my duty trying to catch a drug-buying policeman."

[P.S. - this is not a spambot!]

I read the article too, Mike. While it's good to know that you believe everything that appears in print at Phuketwan, the case against Khun Somkorn has yet to be endorsed by a court.
