Phuket Will Pioneer New, Empowered Tourist Police at Phuket Airport

Tuesday, October 8, 2013
PHUKET: Phuket International Airport is to become the first place where Thailand's Tourist Police are to be used to protect passengers more fully, Tourism and Sports Minister Somsak Pureesrisak says.

The plan has yet to win Cabinet support but Minister Somsak is confident of gaining a thumbs-up and that Tourist Police will gain more authority to deal with crime.

The minister first revealed his intentions in an exclusive interview with Phuketwan at the opening of the Tourist Protection Section at Phuket Provincial Court on September 24.

Now the innovative plan includes Thailand's six major airports - and it will begin with a pioneer venture at Phuket International Airport in December.

''The plan aims to use the tourist police to clamp down on fraud including illegal taxi service as well as emergency assistance for crime victims,'' the minister is quoted as saying in Bangkok.

Tourist Police mostly act as liaison officers and refer complaints to regular police for action. Tourist Police cannot as yet make arrests.

Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport already has a ''court room'' where people involved in crime as culprits or victims can be linked up if necessary by video with judges.

Two Crime Crisis Centres have already opened on Phuket as part of an anti-corruption drive initiated by Minister Somsak.

It's intended to create a ''Phuket model'' for scam-free tourism, and the model will be transported to other tourist destinations.

So far the innovative Tourist Protection Section, opened at Phuket's Provincial Court on September 24 to fast-track cases involving tourists, has yet to have a case referred to it.

Sat and waited for the misses to arrive and was listening to the taxi people. The big blue sign on the left when you're coming and got the prices on ot to different places on Phuket. The touts said it would take them 4 hours to get them to Patong , but if you ride with me. No more than an hour but the price was 3000 baht.
Put some real police officers and get rid of the pack ASAP.

Guys are you correct, I thought the new court had the case settled with the two Israeli/Australian men who were hit by a no swimming sign on Kata beach.

There is no such thing as a '' tourist court'' on Phuket so wherever you read that got the facts wildly wrong.

I don't understand this comment. Does the article mean that TP at the airport do not have power of arrest? Does it mean that ALL TP do not have power of arrest?

What is the point of having TP stationed at the airport when they are not allowed to arrest persons who are breaking the law?

On a related topic, I used to work (for 3 years) as a volunteer TP and Thai translator at the airport, but have been unable to do so for the last 18 months whilst working overseas.

On returning to Phuket and offering my services again as an unpaid TPV at the airport (on 24/7 call), I'm still waiting for the go-ahead from the Phuket TP to start work again. That's more than 2 months after I applied as a 'returning' police officer.

Seems to me that the TP are not in the greatest hurry to welcome experienced TPVs at the airport....

Tourist Police refer cases to regular police who make arrests. You may recall the Chinese tourist who was terrorised by a Phuket taxi driver initially went to Tourist Police, who after some urging directed her to Phuket City police. The new plan will empower Tourist Police to make arrests in some cases.

There never was going to be a ''Tourist Court.'' Thailand has one court system for everybody, Thais and non-Thais. There can't be two systems of justice in any country. The Tourist protection Service was set up to prevent injustices caused sometimes when tourists - Thais and non-Thais - have to go back where they came from before their case is heard.
I really don't have time to answer questions that readers can answer for themselves with a little research of their own.
