Phuket Pig Thief Shot Dead By Irate Karon Farmer

Wednesday, June 22, 2011
PHUKET: A man who tried to steal a large pig was shot dead by a pig farmer on Phuket on Monday afternoon, say police.

Three accomplices dropped the hog-tied pig and fled when the farmer opened fire.

Photographs taken at the scene show the dead man lying near the trussed sow, which the farmer told police weighed in at 135 kilos.

The thieves had killed the pig and were carting it off the property about 2pm on Monday when the owner turned up and opened fire, officers said.

The pig's owner used a thai pradit homemade weapon and shot one of the four men carrying the pig three times, killing him on the property, in the foothills off Patak Road, Karon.

The other men fled. Police do not anticipate they will re-offend in a hurry. The farmer is not expecting to be charged.

I thought the Piper had only one son, called Tom; in this case the police should be on the look-out for Dick and Harry, Tom's best friends. RIP Tom, you got away with the pig the first time.

So let's get this straight: If you see someone trying to steal something from you in Thailand, you're within your rights to shoot them dead on the spot (as long as you're a Thai, of course). That might come in useful.

Steve, illegal firearm used to hinder an illegal action! Don't you think the farmer had the right to use any kind of weapons to protect his belongings?

Funny the other day I was reading this from your competitor online magazine and today this one here:

''You cannot shoot a person just for being in your house - they have to have malicious intent towards you and/or the other residents in the household.

If that is the case, you are then justified in using your gun in self-defense.

However, using a gun for protection does not mean that you can shoot six bullets into the body of an intruder. You may consider firing a warning shot to scare the person(s) away and then shoot at the intruder(s) directly if they persist.

You should shoot to injure in an effort to stop the person(s) from advancing on you or attacking you. Then wait for the police to arrive.

It is illegal for a foreigner to own a gun in Thailand.

However, if a foreigner shoots another person in self-defense, the circumstances will be investigated just as they would if a Thai person were involved.

A special consideration would have to be made regarding the charge of illegal possession of a firearm.''

I do like both sentences in both articles, so how it gonna be?

Oh, come off it. Yes, someone has a right to protect their home and belongings against a violent intruder. How about stop or I'll shoot? This is vigilante justice and one step from chaos. Even if you allow people to replace law enforcement in your society (a patently bad idea) should it not be about shooting them one time to stop them? After the first shot it is doubtful he was going far with the pig. This guy used an illegal firearm to shoot someone #3 times who was apparently unarmed (well except for the pig, which is not a dangerous weapon). If a cop did that it would be considered excessive force at the least and possibly manslaughter in the west. Not to mention his version is the guy was stealing his pig, the other guys version we will never know. You have a police force to enforce the laws, citizens pay taxes for them to do so, it is not up to the citizens to play policeman. Very, very slippery slope you are on there.

@Mario.
obviously it is not okay to kill someone for stealing a pig!!
If the farmer wants to protect his property in such a fashion he should LEGALLY obtain a firearm and licence. at least in this way he would have the option of firing a warning shot rather than just firing off 9 bullets at once!!
He should be prosecuted.. as should the thieves!!
Two wrongs do not make right!!

Next one who intends to steal a pig or more, hopefully will think twice ( I doubt though ). Hope the farmer won't get charged...might be a warning for other dumbs around.

You think those kind of thing is unique and sensational? It happens all the time, very common scenario, especially in the south of Thailand, where the gun culture is the strongest. And I think its not ok to kill somebody for stealing a pig, or anything for that matter. I know some of you here enjoys joning about it, but murders committed with hand guns is a serious problem in Thailand, and is not something to joke about at all.
