Sonny Pasong Cornel's luggage reveals he is a traveller, not a tourist

Phuket Passenger Arrives With 24 Million Baht in Drugs But No Explanation

Friday, April 12, 2013
PHUKET: A passenger from the Philippines has so far been unable to explain how drugs valued at 24 million baht happened to be found in the lining of his luggage when he arrived today at Phuket International Airport.

Sonny Pasong Cornel, 31, was arrested when his bag failed to pass the close scrutiny of an official manning an x-ray machine at Phuket's airport.

Not long after Mr Cornel picked up his luggage from carousel 3, he found himself being escorted to a room where a systematic dismantling of the bag produced seven kilos of ya ice methamphetamine hidden in the base.

Excess baggage of that kind seldom meets approval. Mr Cornel was on his way to Bangkok tonight for further questioning. On Phuket he denied knowing anything about the drugs in his luggage.

He had caught an MAS flight from India to Kuala Lumpur then on from KL to Phuket.

Customs officials also found him in possession of a small amount of what appeared to be another illegal drug, ecstasy.

Whether he knew it was there or not, he will be in a Thai prison for a very, very long time. His nightmare has just begun.

So then if he is unable to explain how the drugs got inside his bags, he must be innocent. Set this man free! He's a traveller and not a tourist.

Shame on the authorities at KL (or India) for not detecting the drugs in the first place. Is it really any-wonder people take the risks they do - he could have taken the drugs from India, sold them in Malaysia and gotten away with it. Lock him up and throw away the key to set an example.

Whilst I am not a lawyer in India and Malaysia he had not collected his baggage therefore perhaps by the eyes of the law he would not have been in possession of the drugs. It does however surprise me that with all the technology at airports he was not detected. Sends the signal to would be drug dealers to go via India and Malaysia.
