Relief for Bangkok airports but nothing so far for Phuket

Phuket Overlooked as AoT Aids Bangkok

Thursday, June 3, 2010
AIRPORTS of Thailand has approved relief measures at Bangkok's two airports ''for airlines and entrepreneurs impacted by the recent political chaos.''

While the Tourism Authority of Thailand has gone out of its way to mention Phuket in attempting to make tourism's recovery as rapid as possible, the AoT focus so far has been solely on Bangkok.

No concessions have been made available for Phuket or for Phuket entrepreneurs, who also suffered a downturn because of the chaos.

AoT chairman and Independent Director Piyapan Champasut said the relief measures will apply to Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.

According to the Thai News Agency, ''all airlines and flights, take off and landing fees will be offered at a 15 percent reduction, and aircraft fees will be for 50 percent for nine months, effective during April-December this year.''

No concessions were mentioned for Phuket, although a constant criticism has been the extremely high airport rent that AoT charges to taxis, limousines and minivans at Phuket International Airport.

The high rents are seen as the main reason why Phuket transport from the airport is so expensive by comparison with Bangkok's airports.

The AoT is also reported to be aiding entrepreneurs within the two Bangkok airports, by lowering rental fees and reducing facilities and maintenance fees at 10 percent for all tenants for the nine months from April through December this year.

Similar concessions for ''entrepreneurs'' on Phuket were not mentioned.
