Phuket Officer Shoots Man Dead in Temple Jungle

Sunday, November 7, 2010
A POLICEMAN shot dead a would-be thief as they battled in the jungle on the hillside below a landmark Phuket temple early today.

The man who was shot dead is believed to have been fleeing after his attempt to rob a Buddhist temple at Kohn Sireh was interrupted by the policeman.

Forensic police, the Public Prosecutor and Phuket City Police Superintendent Colonel Wanchai Eakportip were at the scene of the shooting today, highlight concern about a fatal incident involving an officer.

The name of the officer and his victim have yet to be released.

Yesterday marked the Kathina Festival, a day when Buddhists offer donations at temples all over Phuket. Because of previous thefts at the Koh Sireh Temple, which sits at the top of a steep hill, a police officer was asked to stand guard last night.

About 1.25am, according to Phuket City police sources, the officer heard a man hammering at the temple door with a large wooden staff, apparently attempting a break-in.

Confronted by the officer, the man turned and took off down the hillside. As the officer descended, the police source said, the man waited in ambush then sprang out and attacked the officer with the staff.

The policeman drew his gun and fired four shots, the source said, killing his assailant.

Colonel Wanchai said today that police were becoming increasingly concerned about gangs where Burmese and Thais combined to commit thefts and robberies.

So the police can now shoot dead a man "suspected" of attempted burglary?

Wow, where next?

If you were in fear of your life and being beaten with a wooden staff, what would you do, Wellington?

Run?

I just knew someone was going to ask that. A wooden staff can kill if used on the head, neck or back, if the Officer was indeed attacked, certainly justifiable.

Nick, you just proved you're not just ignorant, but really, really thick.

"concerned about gangs where Burmese and Thais combined to commit thefts and robberies."

Ah! Of course. The Burmese. 'Nuff said.

The police summation just had to mention them dreadful Burmese, didn't they? By definition one criminal cannot be a gang, so what relevance is a Burmese-Thai gang?

And are we to really believe that Thai gangs wouldn't be backstabbing and fingering Burmese criminals wherever possible?

Editor Comment:

Ethnic gangs are a problem in most cities in the world, so metropolitan Phuket is unlikely to prove an exception. It's been some years since every crime was blamed on the Burmese. There have been a couple of cases recently where police have noted Thais and Burmese in gangs working together. I wouldn't read more into it at this stage. It simply came up in conversation.

For a cop to go after a criminal in the jungle, in the dark, by himself, he sounds like a brave man.

"Who cares!"

@Nick.. Well if the officer sustained injuries, it lends credence to a self defense claim. If however the officer is unscathed, it starts to bring into question his story and you wonder if he just executed a man in the dark and claimed attack.

The answer to Nick's response is: His family, his friends, his colleagues, and anyone on Phuket who has a heart and a brain.

If I was the police officer in this jungle at night, I would have shoot the attacker before the wooden club hit me. For sure.

Forensics will see, if he shoot him in the back or into his front. That would be evidence enough for me.
