Phuket Noise-Makers Told to Go Quietly

Tuesday, June 1, 2010
PHUKET GOVERNOR Wichai Praisa-ngob has ordered local authorities to crack down on disturbing loud noise at night, especially in Patong and Rawai.

Complains have gone to the governor about noise in new entertainment areas after local authorities failed to enforce laws against noise pollution.

One Patong resident told Phuketwan: ''It's been a continuing nightmare for scores of expats and Thais who have apartments behind the Jungceylon lifestyle complex. We've been kept awake until the early hours, night after night.

''I know someone who went down at 1am to complain one morning, and nobody was there. No customers, just the noise blaring out.''

It is understood that the upscale Millennium Resort in the Jungceylon complex aims to double-glaze all its rooms as a result of the nuisance noise disturbing guests.

Complaints came first about the muay thai boxing centre behind Jungceylon but that has fallen quiet and been replaced by even more noise coming from a fairground and concert area on newly reclaimed land nearby.

The Patong resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Phuketwan that officials in Patong had fobbed off complaints. He suspects some Patong officials have a financial interest in the new fairground area.

In Rawai, complaints have come about a pub-restaurant where the noise is so loud that neighbors say it comes over the top of television sets turned to full volume.

Governor Wichai has told police in every area of Phuket to check out all complaints about noise and enforce the laws.

''Phuket is certainly a tourist destination so entertainment is a part of that,'' he said. ''But you have to be aware of your neighbors and keep the noise under control.''

He said that anyone who had problems in future with excessive noise from entertainment venues should take their complaints direct to Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

so pleased to hear about an attempt to stop this unnecessary noise nonsense...This noise is an absolute nuisance...Truthfully, I don't see the police doing much to enforce these laws, but the hope that the gov't continues its efforts to stop it.

I am living in Nanai Road in Patong and some nights just cannot sleep until about 3 in the morning. Notorious are the "fabulous" live concerts behind Jungceylon with the boom-boom going on and on...

Oh I so wish this is for real. There's a new Pub built right next to where my friend resides and they play extremely loud music from 4pm to 4am. Residents cannot sleep, study or even watch TV. The noise is so loud that the doors rattle in tune to it.

The Chalong police has been contacted several times but they have done absolutely nothing.

I asked around from those in know and was told a very high ranking police officer is one of the owners.

That sounded like it's time for my friend to move out but if the Governor is serious, then perhaps there's hope.

Would it be possible for PhuketWan to publish the laws and regulations in regard to noise levels or advise us as to where to obtain this information ?

Finally it seems someone can exercise some authority and realise that we all have to live together in this small community.Lets hope the Gov.'s office and the Police can get everyone to compromise for Peace and Quiet!

It is NOT just entertainment venues.

Small shops and even homes blaring bass music are just as big a problem in Phuket.

Almost every neighborhood seems to have one selfish person doing it, and it only takes one person to disturb hundreds.

Similarly the beach bar in Naithon over high season. Little customers or none at all with music blasting till wee hours. Thankfully they take a break during the low season.

Great news! Let's hope this will be enforced, but i don't believe until i see it!

Do not forget, there are people who works every day and who need their sleep. This is not just a party island.

I'm willing to bet that if anyone were to call the police and make a complaint...absolutely nothing will be done...I live within "noise" distance to the venue in the fairgrounds behind Jungceylon...and up until last night they continue to be loud and sleeping is not possible...I doubt very much this will ever stop...It wouldn't surprise as it's mentioned in the article that certain Patong officials have a financial interest in this...especially those who make all the decisions...It's a joke...You're dreaming if you think it will end!

At least there is word about it, look forward instead.

I'm very lucky since I'm living in an area of just residents so it's very quiet except for the soi dogs, but i can live with that.

A simple rule could go easy, play as loud as you want, as long as we on the other - public - side don't complain and can sleep - I'm for that )

I know Laguna in Rawai have good sound protection and i love them for that.

Go check them out and then talk to the owners of the noise problem that they might ask for a professional to help them to take down the noise, refer to Laguna in Rawai then ;)

Well last night the music went on until 2:30 am...so much for enforcing the laws...This is a joke and it will continue to go on as the "authorities" here are only interested in speaking sweet to everyone and not really getting anything done.

I'd like to know who told PhuketWan that the Thai boxing stadium is no longer making noise. I'm listening to it right now, same as I do EVERY day.

Everyone seems to be complaining about the noise from the carnival behind Carrefeur, which is only there one or two weekends a month. I am subjected to the continuous loud-hailers from the boxing stadium EVERY DAY!

Yes we have complained. No nothing has ever happened about it. No I don't expect it ever will.
