Having a blast is fine during a festival but not every night in high season

Phuket Noise Gets Earful from Governor's 'Parliament'

Wednesday, November 24, 2010
NOISE is making itself heard as a source of an increasing number of complaints on Phuket. Nightlife that extends towards daylight has residents in Rawai and behind Jungceylon in Patong reaching for the earplugs.

But it is fireworks and crackers that had the honorary consuls sounding off when they met with Governor Tri Augkaradacha and island leaders earlier this week.

Locals apparently enjoy setting off loud explosions late at night in a shorefront park in Surin. These big bangs are ''loud enough to sound like car bombs,'' one Surin resident said, and they become disturbing across a wide area when they explode after 11pm.

The meeting heard from the honorary consul for Finland, Pamuke Achariyayachai, that the same kind of explosions also rock Karon and Kata throughout Phuket's high season.

Phuket's Police Commander, Major General Pekad Tantipong, said he had been told that guests at some resorts around the island actually asked for fireworks.

However, six resorts around the Surin area signed a petition about the noise that went to then Governor Wichai Prais-ngob back in August.

At least one of the signatories to that petition believes the late-night explosions are an unsubtle signal from locals that they still run Phuket.

German honorary consul Dirk Naumann noted that he attended a welcome party for visiting Australian Ambassador James Wise at a resort in Surin last week.

''After the first 10 words of the ambassador's speech, the fireworks began,'' Mr Naumann said. ''I asked a number of hotel managers who were present what they knew about the terrible noise, and they said the crackers were discharged every night of the season between October and April.''

Khun Pamuke said the problem was similar in Kata and Karon. Fireworks are permitted for specific festivals but the sale is supposed to be restricted or banned at other times of the year.

The Chief Executive of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, Paiboon Upatising, recommended that a committee be set up to put into effect some of the suggestions raised at the Phuket ''Parliament.''

Late night fireworks and noise are likely to be high on the list for action.

Ok Ok Ok, Much of the news in the phuket wan lately hints towards the governments desire to change and civilize the island a bit. Anyone who's been here longer then me have any idea if this is anything new?? Or have they always pretended to care??

about as much chance of stopping people using fireworks as they have of stopping them eating durian!!

Editor Comment:

There is no law prohibiting the eating of durian: there is a law restricting the sale of fireworks. Nobody is suggesting that people stop using fireworks at the appropriate time, during festivals. Phuket's tourism leaders now know what needs to happen.

Start with the big hotels on the beach in the Kata and Kata Noi areas!

Years ago, I recall a Q&A in the PG from a guy who wanted to light off a few fireworks at his BD party. The reply from the government official contained many steps to do this legally.

Why bother when you can go down to the fireworks store on Phrabaramee Road and get whatever you need.

"Phuket's Police Commander, Major General Pekad Tantipong, said he had been told that guests at some resorts around the island actually asked for fireworks."

Always a safe bet to try and pass the blame onto those pesky farang tourists..

Nah, he's just stating what he was told. And it's probably true, in some cases.

I actually like fireworks, and I am sure others also do. Common in Patong during December. Not so fun for those who want to sleep tho.
