A PHUKET man has been left to raise a newborn and two other young sons after post-birth complications in a Phuket private hospital led to the destruction of 70 to 80 percent of his wife's brain.
Market stallholder Atib Boonnark, 47, is now in dispute with Bangkok Hospital Phuket over the cost of ongoing care of his wife following the delivery of their son, ''Google,'' on March 18.
Khun Atib said today that as a result of his wife Pariporn's condition, the hospital offered to pay the first 1.4 million baht towards her treatment. However, 38-year-old Khun Pariporn remains in the hospital's intensive care unit and the cost of her care already totals 1.9 million baht, he said.
''Google,'' a healthy 2.67 kilos, was delivered by Caesarian at 10.41am on March 18, Khun Atib said. He told Phuketwan that after the birth, Khun Pariporn was bleeding. But the doctor said it was no cause for concern, Khun Atib said.
Bleeding was again noticed about 1.30pm but Khun Pariporn did not receive her first blood transfusion until after 3.30pm, Khun Atib said.
Only at 10pm that night did a nurse decide on the basis of continued internal bleeding to send Khun Pariporn to the hospital's intensive care unit, Khun Atib said.
A surgeon later removed her uterus in an emergency operation, Khun Atib said. He added that he has been told his wife is now 70-80 percent brain-dead. She can open her eyes but there is no sign of movement or communication.
With three sons to raise - Guy, 14, Gad, 2, and newborn Google - Khun Atib is concerned about the future and has chosen to speak to the media about the case.
He said all his boys were born at Bangkok Hospital Phuket because, although costs were high, he regarded the treatment there as good.
He and his wife ran a market stall in central Phuket City.
''We walked in to the hospital on March 18 a happy couple,'' he said. ''I could never imagine this happening. But who will help to take care of my boys now?''
Khun Atib is also concerned about future care for his wife, who now appears to be seriously and permanently disabled and in need of constant help.
Khun Pariporn's father and mother were also at the hospital today. ''Google'' and Gad currently spend a lot of time in the hospital nursery.
Hospital staff with knowledge of the case were in a meeting and unavailable for comment to Phuketwan.

I do hope some kind lawyer is reading this and will step forward to help this family in their hour of need, before the medical staff involved in this case close ranks and the truth is lost to this poor man and his kids forever.Along with any chance of compensation.
