PHUKET Muslims gathered at Phuket International Airport today to farewell a large group making the journey of a lifetime to Mecca.
The grounds alongside the airport were turned into a place where people could eat and prepare to say goodbye. Pickup trucks parked one by one, with the passengers alighting and joining others under canvas awnings.
Women making the journey were dressed in yellow, while the men wore neat black jackets. They carried identical luggage and In both cases, the Thai flag was prominent.
The travellers will be bussed to their flights later today, when all the preparations have been made and all the goodbyes said.
The Hajj will end in about a month when there will be more gatherings at Phuket airport to welcome home the pilgrims. About one in four of Phuket's citizens are Muslims.
