Confessed hitman Somchai Mingjaiyen 'planned a second Phuket murder'

Phuket Murder Trial Awaits Transfer of Six Accused

Tuesday, July 13, 2010
FURTHER interviews have to take place before a charge of murder against Singaporean Diana Goh Li Fun can proceed, Phuket Provincial Public Prosecutor Boonthop Lanthong said today.

Thirty-three-year-old Ms Goh and six others have been accused over the shooting of an expat Canadian property developer and former model on Phuket in February last year.

Francis Alex Degioanni was gunned down in his vehicle outside his home-office in Patong on his 34th birthday. Ms Goh has been free awaiting trail since April 7 after appealing to the Supreme Court in Bangkok to be allowed bail.

Prosecutor Khun Boonthop told Phuketwan today that the case could not go ahead until after the co-accused had been interviewed in Ms Goh's presence. He planned to apply to have the six transferred to Phuket as soon as possible.

Police say Mr Degioanni borrowed a large amount of money from Ms Goh, then pretended that he owed her nothing. Because she was broke and he refused to repay the money, she borrowed 1.5 million baht from a friend in Singapore to have him murdered, police allege.

The alleged gunmen were named as Somchai Mingjaiyen, 29, and Suwan Simet, 32. One friend of Ms Goh, Sumon Sumen, 39, is accused of helping to plan the murder and putting the money for the gunmen into a bank account.

Another friend, Netnapa Witayatamsopon, 37, is accused of helping to plan to murder and finding the gunmen.

Eakapon Lakrod, 35, a friend of Khun Sumon's, allegedly planned the killing by observing Mr Degioanni's behavior and deciding the place and method of execution.

A seventh accused is said to have driven the motorcycle on which the killers escaped.

Mr Degioanni was sitting in his lucky registration 7777 pickup on February 19 last year when the killers opened fire.

So cool were the alleged murderers as they strolled up that the Canadian's wife and the proprietress of a hotel next door got a good look at the shooters' faces before they riddled the vehicle with bullets and ran.

The woman at the hotel even smiled at the assassins. She thought they might be potential guests, coming to take rooms at her hotel.

Khun Somchai, described by police as a Bangkok-based professional hitman, allegedly planned to wait a month after shooting dead Mr Degioanni, then carry out a second hit, ordered on an expat living in central Phuket.

The name of the target has never been revealed. Police said Khun Somchai was paid 400,000 baht for his part in the Degioanni killing.

The six accused are being held in Bangkok because of the severity of the penalty for murder.

Even if the charge has yet to reach court, people who face penalties of more than 18 years are transferred from Phuket to other jails.

It is expected the trial of all seven accused will take place at the same time.
