Phuket Murder Hunt Begins: Western Man Found Stabbed, Bound in Pond Near Patong Hill

Friday, November 30, 2012
PHUKET: Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a Western man was discovered in a pond near Patong Hill on Phuket tonight.

The man, aged 40 to 50 and balding, had his wrists bound and was wrapped in garbage bags.

Doctors at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City found stab wounds to the man's head, chest and ankles.

The body was discovered abour 6pm in a pond near Bang Thong Village, off Soi Bang Thong, which runs off the main Patong Hill Road.

Residents investigated a smell, and found the man's body, wrapped in plastic.

Rescue workers brought up the body.

Police are convinced the man was murdered and are now trying to identify him.

Lieutentant Sakchai Chonyong from Tungthong Police Station is heading the investigating team.

The man was about 180 centimetres tall, thickset, balding. He had three stab wounds to the head, five to his chest and two in an ankle.

He was wearing only black underwear. There were no obvious identification marks or tattoos.

After an estimated week in the water, his facial characteristics are no longer obvious.

The Patong Hill road is officially known as Phrabaramee Road. Soi Bang Thong runs off to the left, as vehicles go up the hill from the Phuket City-Kathu side.

It's the first road past the Tungthong police checkpoint.

Has nobody told you, SUe, that most Westerners murdered on Phuket are killed by other Westerners.

The ankle wound may be a defensive wound from falling on his back and kicking his attackers.

Possibly, but speculation is pointless.

Similarity to the South African killed near Bangkok. Thai (Ex)-Wife, Family conflict.
Was also only in underwear, South African Brand.
No special Brand this time, as it seems.
But bound hands?
More likely a business conflict.
Often, we hear it soon!

I tend to disagree with that statement, though what I would put on the table is that unless there is 'in your face, irrevocable evidence' (the Australian lady in Kata, or the Swede murdered by 2 other Swedes for example), it is unusual for the killers of tourists/expats (Westerners or otherwise) to be caught.

You are free to disagree all you like, Phil.

Those of us who have covered cases going back five years can tell you that expats are responsible for killing most expats, and for killing a fair portion of Thais as well.

Please tell us which killers haven't been caught.

No idea what you're on about, Ty. Try conveying some facts.

so any reader post by on here can expect condescending, even arrogant editorial responses it appears? If the views of other interested readers approve of your almost dictatorial editing style so be it, but I would feel confident that most out there routinely expect your "personal opinions" when it comes to reporting incidents instead of a more factual, investigative approach akin to what we would expect from a real journalist living in the real world. For what it's worth, and expecting some sort of predictive response, my faith in the local authorities to uncover the facts surrounding this victims demise remains to be seen regardless of what appears to be a good source of forensic opportunities when it comes to clothing still attached and a complete body to investigate? We shall see

As an anonymous commenter who doesn't even care to invent a name, your ability to distinguish between reliable factual reporting and the mist of ethernet opinion-making seems a little warped, anonymous. The day we even give a teensy weensy amount of credibility or care to comments like this one is the day the world ends.

It irks me greatly to say, but you appear to be right, given the latest developments in this case!

Too early to know for sure, Buster.

Predictable as stated, and the credibility is is the responding! Refering to the "day the world ends" could be your next yarn if all is to be believed by the doomsday sayers perhaps? jury still out on who the killers were, but good update on police response
