A MONK and a young man giving alms on his birthday were killed by a speeding pickup about 6.30am in Phuket City today.
The two died when the pickup took a sharp corner beside a canal on the way to Saphan Hin and ran off the road, hitting the pair as the monk blessed the young man.
The driver fled immediately, and police are tracking his whereabouts.
Both the monk and the young man were dead on arrival at Vachira Hospital in Phuket City.
Police named the monk as Saman Naraki, 60, from Sansuk Temple in Phuket City. The young man, who worked at a nearby restaurant in the suburb of Poonphon, was Kidsada Nutnewnamg, from the northern province of Uttaradit. He was 23 today.

I feel so very sad at the loss of life so unexpected...both passed away with merit in their heart and mind! My deepest sympathy for the families.
May the police find the reckless person! I feel that reckless driving and speeding should be more controlled...I would like to know how many "fines" for people caught driving too fast as well as any other faulty driving causing harm to others and to themselves.
A "stop reckless driving" campaign is recommended! Thank you.
