Phuket's beaches are heavily promoted but the truth is some are also polluted

Phuket Mayor Writes to Quell 'Sea Waste' TV Damage

Saturday, April 30, 2011
QUESTIONS are already being asked in Germany and other countries in Europe about a popular television show that is due to screen in May, alleging that Phuket resorts dump dangerously polluted water into the sea.

The Mayor of Karon, Tawee Tongcham, told Phuketwan today he had written a letter about the issue and sent it to Provincial Hall yesterday. However, he could not recollect what was in yesterday's letter and had to cut the conversation short to go to a meeting.

Phuketwan has this week had telephone calls from Germany seeking more information about the show, 'Wir Retten Ihren Urlaub!' (We Save Your Holiday!).

Tourism Authority of Thailand offices in Germany have been among those already contacted by the media in Europe, asking for more information.

Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha was told on April 11 that the German television show is about to report that up to five Phuket resorts pollute the Kata-Karon sea with waste water containing faecal material where children and tourists swim.

Today Mayor Tawee suggested that an electrical failure at the region's waste water plant on the day that the water was tested could possibly have been what caused German testing to produce such a result.

An officer at Provincial Hall in Phuket City said that Mayor Tawee's letter had already been forwarded to Thailand's Ambassador for Germany, Dr Hanns H. Schumacher.

It was German honorary consul Dirk Naumann who told Governor Tri earlier this month that 'We Save Your Holiday!' will probably allege that five resorts dump their waste into water that flows into the sea at two of Phuket's best-loved beaches, Kata and Karon.

Mr Naumann said WSYH was the most popular tv travel show in Germany - and it would later be screened across Scandinavia, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. ''This is going to be damaging for Phuket,'' Mr Naumann said.

Governor Tri said that he would look into what could be done and set up a special committee, seeking regular two-monthly updates on the quality of waste water at Kata and Karon. Any resort that breached standards would be closed down, he said.

The most northern end of Patong has 2 very suspect Blue PVC Pipes and a large storm water drain discharging contaminated water directly onto the beach. There is no way on earth I would swim in the general vicinity.

If the allegations made in the show are not true, why not simply have independent testing done and the results published.

Not too long ago water off Patong beach was tested to contain e-coli bacteria (feacal matter) about 12 times the allowed limit.

Typical reaction from the local authorities is denial and cover-up.

Too late.

Anyone can go to the beach, take a sample and have it tested in a laboratory. There's no way they can stop or hide those results.

Birds are finally coming home to roost. Infrastructure has been neglected for too long. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

If the KARON MAYOR,is bothered about this TV program, it's simple, get an independent company to test the pollution ... Then we can see who is right.

gee, pollution hurts but so does disease. Phuket officials do not take pollution seriously. Every rainy season the Kata Bay beach waters turn sulphourous and on rare occasions, black. Why? It's the accumulated waste sludge from the open sewers. Walk along some of the roads any time of year and one can smell the degrading waste. Swim at your own risk.

So this is the Thai Authorities answer to 'Damage Control'? Pass the buck, look the other way, but never take positive steps to tackle the problem. Just another issue that will be swept under the carpet and ignored?
Let's hope not.

This shows that on a separate issue of jet-ski scams can actually be fought successfully 100% outside of Thailand by such programs.

I have to be careful, not to write to cynical. But the mayor's performance is questionable. Electric failure. Jaja.

I can tell you, that this German program like to do the loud allegations, but they are not neglecting their dues to the cause. They tested the water, because of complains of tourists. So at least to days with electric failures.

My guess is, we will see more shows like this in the future, as the tv stations have more money to spend on stories far away (not only Mallorca and Turkey), thanks to again growing revenues - at least in Germany. And wait for the British and Scandinavians to pick up the slack. Hidden camera action will come to the east-asia destinations more often.

Here are the good stories at least.
