Phuket Marks World Buffalo Congress at Karon Resort

Tuesday, May 7, 2013
PHUKET - Phuket is hosting the 10th World Buffalo Congress and the 7th Asian Buffalo Congress from May 6-8.

The main purpose is to exchange information and knowledge in order to increase the number of buffaloes and to build an international network to promote research and study about the animals.

Approximately 500 farmers, academics and business associates from over 35 countries gathered at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa in Phuket to attend the opening ceremony on Monday.

Chairman of the organising committee for the World Buffalo Congress, Dr Rangsan Panpai, said that the first congress was held in 1985 and has since been held every three years in each member country, on a rotational basis.

Thailand was nominated as this year's host in the previous meeting held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he and Professor Dr Metha Wannapat were also chosen to hold the positions of President and Vice President of the International Buffalo Federation during 2010-2013.

The main purpose of the congress is to exchange ideas and information about scientific knowledge and educational technology, to increase the number of buffaloes and to establish an international network between buffalo researchers.

There will be keynote lecturers in 10 fields such as reproduction, nutrition and genetics and feeding.

Several awards will be handed out during the event while the announcement of the country to host the next international buffalo congress will also be made.

Thought they'd have already an enduring and permanent exhibition every night in Soi Bangla "to exchange information and knowledge in order to increase the number of buffaloes and to build an international network to promote research and study about the(se) animals."
