A Phuketwan survey of flower shops on Phuket showed that roses, the all-time favorite way of showing affection - at least on Valentine's Day - are twice the price they were last year. The 100 percent rise surprised the rose sellers. But they say blooms in love are as popular as ever.
Naraset Pinkeaw of the I Am Flower shop in Maeluan Road, Phuket City, even has 20 large roses that will go for 1000 baht to 5000 baht. Spend 2000 baht here, and you earn two free tickets to the cinema as well.
An explanation for what's draining some of the color out of the rose-selling industry came from Sum Lurng florists in Chao Fa Road West, where Yupin Chaipon, who has been selling flowers for 18 years, said: ''This year we have ordered our roses from China, but they are smaller in size because of changes in weather patterns.''
Global warming appeared to be one of the problems, said Ratcharee Petpabood at the Poobpa Shop. ''People love roses,'' she said. ''But the price is 30 to 50 baht per rose. ''This year is so much more expensive than last year.''
