Phuket Love is . . . Just Another Price Rise

Monday, February 14, 2011
LOVE is becoming more costly on Phuket, which will come as news only to those who do not have to foot the bills for romance. And on Phuket, the island of love for some, Valentine's Day has only brought more evidence of those two great uncontrollable evils: inflation and global warming.

A Phuketwan survey of flower shops on Phuket showed that roses, the all-time favorite way of showing affection - at least on Valentine's Day - are twice the price they were last year. The 100 percent rise surprised the rose sellers. But they say blooms in love are as popular as ever.

Naraset Pinkeaw of the I Am Flower shop in Maeluan Road, Phuket City, even has 20 large roses that will go for 1000 baht to 5000 baht. Spend 2000 baht here, and you earn two free tickets to the cinema as well.

An explanation for what's draining some of the color out of the rose-selling industry came from Sum Lurng florists in Chao Fa Road West, where Yupin Chaipon, who has been selling flowers for 18 years, said: ''This year we have ordered our roses from China, but they are smaller in size because of changes in weather patterns.''

Global warming appeared to be one of the problems, said Ratcharee Petpabood at the Poobpa Shop. ''People love roses,'' she said. ''But the price is 30 to 50 baht per rose. ''This year is so much more expensive than last year.''

Is Thailand not producing it's own roses?

Thai roses are not as desirable romantically, smaller in size and inclined to not last very long.

ED! Lincoln is asking about roses and your answer describes thai men, " not as desirable romantically, smaller in size and inclined to not last very long."

I am talking about roses, whether long stem or short stem.

For 2000Baht, I would take my lady for a dinner and a VIP cough cinema @ Central and still would have some money over. Maybe me and my wife are more practical but it is amazing how the rose prices hike the skies when it is valentine.

Not to enter into debate about how long or enduring Thai roses are, I'd just like to mention that they cost Bt 3 per piece, even less when bought in bulk.

Roses doesn't grow well in Thailand or in other tropical countries, they need a long cold period for "reload" their flowers.
