UPDATE
A CANDLELIGHT vigil is being held outside Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City from 7pm on Wednesday for stricken footballer Camara Ahmed before his fellow FC Phuket players head for Bangkok and their next game on Saturday.
Original Report
FC PHUKET football star Camara Ahmed remains in a critical condition in a Phuket hospital cardiac ward today while hundreds of supporters and admirers hope for his recovery.
Doctors say his future remains unclear, having had his heart stop more than once since being admitted after collapsing during Saturday evening's winning match at Phuket City's Surakul Stadium.
Teammates and opposition players ran to the aid of the FC Phuket player from the Ivory Coast and carried him to an ambulance which took the 26-year-old star to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City.
Last night there was no sign of the 26-year-old father of a month-old child emerging from a coma. Doctors believe narrowed arteries may have been the cause behind his apparent on-field heart attack.
Teammates have been carrying out a vigil near the Phuket hospital's cardiac care unit, with hundreds of fans joining Ivory Coast companions and fellow FC Phuket players, Diarra Ali and Nene Bi, who are almost constantly by his side.
Among the visitors yesterday was Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation chief executive Paiboon Upatising, a supporter of FC Phuket and an admirer of the way Ahmed played the game and earned respect off the field as well.
''I feel so sorry for the young man,'' Khun Paiboon said. ''If there is any way we can possibly help, we will.''
FC Phuket plays away in Bangkok this weekend in continuing its remarkable climb up Thailand's football ladder.
But on November 13, the team returns to play on Phuket and a big benefit is planned for Ahmed, who is regarded as one of the main contributors to the Phuket's success in the 2010 season.
