Practice this week . . . now a real landslip stops traffic on Patong Hill

Phuket Landslip Closes Lanes over Patong Hill

Friday, July 2, 2010
A LANDSLIP opposite the Chinese temple has reduced traffic over Patong Hill to one lane, Phuketwan readers reported this evening.

Persistent heavy rain over several days has heightened the likelihood of unexpected land movements on slopes all over the island, especially on construction sites.

Today's slip came about 5pm, backing up traffic on both the Patong and Phuket City sides of the notoriously steep and winding Patong Hill road.

Nobody was injured. The road is expected to be reopened quickly.

A landslip on a Patong hillside earlier in the month buried alive two workers and brought a renewed call from Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob for care on dangerous hillsides.

The Patong tessaban council turned out this week in a practice drill for further potential slides.

Continuing thunderstorms are forecast for Phuket over the next few days, making the marketing of Phuket's monsoon season as ''summer'' seem rather silly without sunshine.

Why no pictures or update. Is the hill open now or not? Have you dropped the ball in there at Phuketwan? Or is it a non-story because there are no Rohinga refugees involved?

Thanks, Chippie. We'll give you a discount on your 10-year subscription. We didn't say the hill was closed, just tighter than usual. Enjoy your ride.
